REU Seminars
As part of our SUREPAM program we conduct a seminar for the participating students and faculties. For 2009 we will be providing credits for this seminar, transferable to your home institution (enrolling in this seminar is required of all participants).
Summer 2009: Description
Summer 2008 (June 24-July 10)
1. Application of Analysis in Mathematical biology, 2 credits (Prof. Gheorghe Craciun )
In this course we study mathematical and computational models in biology and medicine, learn how to create such models for various biological systems, use mathematical software to implement these models, and interpret numerical simulation results. We will discuss the following topics: MATLAB software for simulation of biological dynamics, graphical representations of biological interactions, system states and steady states, phase plane and bifurcation analysis, interaction networks and mass action kinetics, robustness and sensitivity analysis, as well as other topics based on student interest and suggestions.
2. MatLab applications (Prof. Robert Langer)
This is a hands-on introduction to MATLAB, a numerical computing environment and programming language which features powerful tools for matrix manipulation, plotting of functions and data, implementation of algorithms. Topics: scalar and matrix operations, plotting, eigenvalues and eigenvectors, user-defined functions (m-files), ordinary differential equations, and possibly other topics depending on the interest of the students.
