FEATURED ARTISTS -- Fall 2009 --
Jeremy Messersmith | The Wars of 1812 | Chris Koza
Jeremy Messersmith | September 25 & 26
|
Jeremy Messersmith's first full-length release, The Alcatraz Kid (Princess Records, 2006) was marked by a wide-eyed clarity and sweet, straightforward musicianship that resulted in critical acclaim and a growing live following. His new release, The Silver City, is part homage to the twinkling pop vistas of The Beach Boys and the sixties, and part incisive take on the hopes that get us through the everyday commute. The Silver City pushes Messersmith’s precise lyrics conceptually and expands the scope of his sound. With the celebratory track “Light Rail” already in rotation and in demand on local radio, expect The Silver City to both cement Messersmith’s reputation as a musician and songwriter.

The Wars of 1812 | October 9 & 10
|
In the summer of 2006, four friends united in De Pere, WI to make a record. Over the course of five days, the quartet learned, rehearsed, recorded, and fashioned together a cohesive assemblage of nine songs, which would come to be known collectively as Status Quo Ante Bellum - translating to "as it was before the war." In August of 2007, the four members relocated and reunited in Minnesota's Twin Cities, and attempted to create a sound in a music scene they knew very little about. Often compared to acts such as Wilco and Spoon, The Wars of 1812 is led by singer and guitarist Peter Pisano, whose smiley, yet satirical vocals carry the album. The instrumentation is the typical set-up of guitar, bass, drums, and keys with select textural additives that make for a full, well-executed sound with its altering dynamics and intricacies.

Chris Koza | November 20 & 21
|
A Minneapolis-based singer-songwriter who mixes witty banter with catchy lyrics and scintillating guitar riffs, Chris Koza has a voice reminiscent of a young Paul Simon and lyrics comparable to those of Bob Dylan. Koza and his band have released three albums since arriving on the Twin Cities music scene after the debut of their first album, 2004’s Exit Pesce. Music critics have compared Chris’ sound to Wilco, Paul Simon, Nick Drake, Beck and Ryan Adams, among others. Currently the band is touring the country in support of their latest album, The Dark, Delirious Morning, which continues to receive strong reviews and airplay on MPR’s influential 89.3 The Current.
