Catchpenny EAU CLAIRE -- Minneapolis band Catchpenny will headline a free outdoor concert Friday, May 9, at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. Chester Bay and Meridene will be special guests at the show, which will begin at 7 p.m. on Davies Center's south lawn. (located between Davies Center and Phillips parking lot) In the event of rain, the concert will move to the Council Fire Room of Davies Center.

With a sound described as "polished, bouncy, harmony-loaded pop-rock" (Minneapolis Star-Tribune), Catchpenny has headlined shows from Los Angeles to Chicago and set record attendance numbers at venues like the Hard Rock Cafe since the band came together about four years ago. The band's music has been heard in national TV spots by ESPN and Arizona Jeans.

Catchpenny's first full-length CD "Chance for a Lifetime" (2005) is a fusion of melody and harmony. After the release of their CD "From Where You Are" in 2006, The Onion wrote that "the band has the talent and the chops to merit a little love from the fickle Gods of Radio."

In 2007 Catchpenny hosted a national college music tour advocating new music and social activism, sponsored by the Twin Cities beverage company Airforce Nutrisoda. "Raising awareness on campus to promote a healthy planet is very important to our band," said lead vocalist and guitarist Christian Schauf. Other members of Catchpenny are Zach Schauf (vocals, keys, guitar), Eric Raum (lead guitar) and Josh Fink (bass).

Chester Bay is a rock quartet fueled by two vocalists who happen to be twin brothers, a blues-driven guitarist, and a heavy-hitting drummer. The band's name merges the names of their hometowns, Rochester and Green Bay. Meridene is an Eau Claire band influenced by The Shins, Sufjan Stevens, Rilo Kiley, Wilco and Death Cab for Cutie.

Sponsored by the University Activities Commission of the UW-Eau Claire Student Senate, the free concert is open to all ages.

UAC's SkaFest 13!! EAU CLAIRE -- Something To Do will headline the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire's 13th annual Ska Fest concert Friday, March 28. Doors will open at 7 p.m. in the Council Fire Room of Davies Center.

After winning a national songwriting competition put on by Henkel Consumer Adhesives' Duck brand duct tape in 2003, Something To Do earned mentions on CNN Headline News, National Public Radio, and in over 150 other media outlets. The Waukesha-based fan favorites have continued on, gaining popularity along the way, playing shows across the Midwest, the East Coast and Canada. In 2005 the group was nominated for two Wisconsin Area Music Industry (WAMI) awards including Band of the Year.

Joining Something To Do at Ska Fest 13 will be Catch of the Day, Manic Sewing Circle and Offend Your Friends. Car Full of Midgets will open the show.

Catch of the Day is a seven-piece ska band from Slinger, Wis., that fuses ska, funk, reggae, jazz and rock. One of the better-known ska bands in the Midwest, Catch of the Day has shared the stage with Suburban Legends, Mustard Plug, Catch 22, Planet Smashers, Big D and the Kids Table and I Voted for Kodos. The band has played at Summerfest, Skappleton, and at two previous Ska Fests in Eau Claire.

Manic Sewing Circle, from Chicago, has been playing its blend of ska-punk since 2004. The band has two recordings, "Nobody Gets What We're Saying" (2005) and "Summer Spins" (2007), on Bouncing Betty Records. It has shared a bill with such bands as Big D and the Kids Table, Mustard Plug, Patent Pending, The Planet Smashers and Suburban Legend, and toured with the Vans Warped Tour 2006 and 2007.

Offend Your Friends, from Fond du Lac, is a high-energy, ska-influenced punk band that has been together for about four years. The band's songs feature social and political lyrics, but don't let their serious side get in the way of a good party.

The show is open to all ages. Proof of age will be required for alcohol purchases.

Tickets are $5 ($3 with UW-Eau Claire student ID card) at the Service Center in Davies Center's east lobby, and will be sold at the door. Patrons may also charge tickets to MasterCard or Visa when they order by phone. Call 715-836-3727 -- or, outside the immediate Eau Claire area, call toll-free 800-949-UWEC.  Quietdrive EAU CLAIRE -- Popular Minneapolis-based pop-punk band Quietdrive will headline a concert at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Saturday, Feb. 16. Doors will open at 7 p.m. in the Council Fire Room of Davies Center.

Formed in 2002, Quietdrive released its Epic Records debut, "When All That's Left Is You," in 2006. "Rise from the Ashes," the first single from the album, was featured on the soundtrack for the EA Sports videogame "NHL 2007," and in January 2007 Quietdrive was named Artist of the Month on Xbox Live.

Quickly gaining in popularity, Quietdrive toured extensively throughout 2006 and 2007. Their cover of the Cyndi Lauper song “Time After Time” was used in promotions by the WNBA, featured on the soundtrack for the 2006 film John Tucker Must Die, and featured in the trailer for the 2008 remake of horror film Prom Night. The song also became a minor hit on pop radio, hitting #33 on the American Top 40 syndicated countdown show.

Quietdrive continues to tour the nation and expand their ever-growing fan base. The band will be back in the studio recording a new album early this year.

Madison-based alternative rock band The Box Social will also perform. Influenced by groups ranging from Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers to Sonic Youth, The Box Social presents hooky, energetic songwriting coupled with exciting live shows.

Opening the show will be Minnesota-based rock band The Soviet Machines.

Tickets are $10 ($8 for UW-Eau Claire students) at the Service Center in Davies Center's east lobby, and will be sold at the door. The show is open to all ages. Proof of age will be required for alcohol purchases.

Ha Ha Tonka EAU CLAIRE -- Ozarks area indie, rock band Ha Ha Tonka will headline a free outdoor concert at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Friday, September 14. The show will start at 7 p.m. on the lower campus mall, between Zorn Arena and Schneider Hall.

Roaring out of the Ozarks with a bottle in one hand and a bible in the other, Ha Ha Tonka mix sanctified four-part harmonies and blistering rock, carving out songs that evoke the dichotomies that define their home. The Springfield, Missouri natives dubbed their new album Buckle in the Bible Belt in homage to their hometown, so named for its position on the dividing line of the Ozark states. Their dark view of the realities of socioeconomic hardship, backwoods prejudices and drug abuse is leavened by wry humor and a deep appreciation for regional storytelling traditions.

Buckle in the Bible Belt was recorded, fittingly, in an old church in Union, Missouri, with a control booth where the pulpit had once been. Augmented with piano and organ, the songs bring to mind southern bands like REM and Kings of Leon as well as classics like The Band and Bruce Springsteen.

Formed in 2004 under the name Amsterband, the band released their debut CD, Beatchen and hit the road, playing with a diverse range of acts including Tapes ‘n Tapes, Say Anything, Soul Asylum, Limbeck and Robert Randolph & The Family Band.

The band self-released Buckle in the Bible Belt in 2006 before catching the attention of Bloodshot Records and signing a deal in May 2007. Deciding a name change was in order, they chose Ha Ha Tonka as a nod to their Ozark pride. It’s the name of a state park in southwestern Missouri, full of natural bridges, sandstone cliffs, caves and a castle. That’s right, a castle. This past summer Ha Ha Tonka toured nationally with Violent Femmes and Old 97’s.

Also appearing will be popular Wisconsin-based rock band Fat Maw Rooney. Formed in 1996, Fat Maw Rooney has emerged onto the national music scene as a serious force to be reckoned with. Although their roots are firmly planted in the blues, southern rock and funk genres, the band never hesitates to experiment with different musical styles to make their compositions and live shows memorable.

Fat Maw Rooney has performed at such prestigious venues and events such as the 10,000 Lakes Festival in Detroit Lakes, MN, The Rave Ball Room in Milwaukee and the Orpheum Theatre in Madison. They’ve also shared billing with major national touring talent such as Trey Anastasio of Phish, The String Cheese Incident, moe., Widespread Panic, The Black Crowes and Robert Randolph and the Family Band.

The concert is free and open to all ages. In the event of rain, the show will be presented in the Council Fire Room of Davies Center.

The concert is sponsored by the University Activities Commission of the UW-Eau Claire Student Senate.
