EAU CLAIRE -- Minneapolis-based funk-rock band Flavor and Madison area funk-rock band The Pipe Circus will be performing on Friday, September 17, at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. The show will begin at 8 p.m. in the Council Fire Room of Davies Center and is open to all ages.

Minneapolis-based quartet, Flavor, is quickly gaining fans across the Midwest and beyond. Known for their high-energy shows, Flavor’s music has a pop-rock sensibility laced with funky hooks, Latin rhythms, and soulful melodies. The compositions resonate between expressive tales of love and regret to driving songs of suspense and cynicism.
Soon after starting to play live, Flavor was nominated for Best New Band for the 2002 Minnesota Music Awards and began winning a number of contests with their eclectic and moody live performances including the 2002 KQRS Homegrown Contest, the Jim Beam Band of the Week Contest and the Best Band competition at St. Scholastica.
The Pipe Circus is a five-piece Madison-area group that's been together since early 1997. Compared to bands such as The Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Police and Sublime, The Pipe Circus is considered a fusion of funk, punk, reggae and rock with a splash of jazz.
The Pipe Circus has performed at premier music venues such as The Milwaukee Ale House, The Annex, The Rave, and many others, as well as over 30 festivals including Summerfest from 2001-2004. The Pipe Circus is currently touring colleges in the Midwest and working on the release of their fourth CD.
Local favorites Amateur Love will be opening the show. Described by Eau Claire's premiere arts and events publication, Volume One as a band that has "brilliantly avoided the usual rock & roll pitfalls and evolved into a sonically mature yet refreshingly new singer/songwriter art-pop band." Amateur Love will be a great start to an excellent show.
The concert is sponsored by the University Activities Commission of the UW-Eau Claire Student Senate.

EAU CLAIRE -- Regional rock acts Orestus, Vile Red and Gone Out Gone will create the "Finals Fury" rock show Friday, Dec. 10, at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. Doors will open at 7:30 p.m. for the 8 p.m. show in the Council Fire Room of Davies Center. The show is open to all ages.

Orestus has an all-original sound covering a wide range of music, from throw-down moshing to softer rock tunes. Orestus has played a wide variety of local and regional venues, including playing Milwaukee's Summerjam. The group's sound has been compared to that of such hard-rock acts as Rage Against the Machine, Korn, Limp Bizkit and Primer 55.
Vile Red, a female-fronted melodic metal band influenced by old and Swedish metal, formed in June 2003. The mix of powerful driving riffs and intense female vocals displays the individual styles and influences of the four eclectic members, who have spent much of their time writing music.
Gone out Gone, a Twin Cities-based band, is best described as space rock. They deliver top-quality rock performances that soothe the aching id of the concert goer.
Tickets are $5 ($3 for UW-Eau Claire students) at the University Service Center, in Davies Center’s east lobby, and at the door. The show is open to all ages; proof of age is required in the bar area.
Patrons may also charge tickets to MasterCard or Visa when they order by phone. Call (715) 836-3727 – or, outside the immediate Eau Claire area, call toll-free 1-800-949-UWEC. A $3 handling fee will be added to all telephone charge orders.
The concert is sponsored by the University Activities Commission of the UW-Eau Claire Student Senate.

EAU CLAIRE -- Los Angeles-based electronipop indie rock band Rilo Kiley will headline the 12th annual AIDS Benefit Concert on Friday, May 13, at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. Omaha-based Neva Dinova and upcoming local favorites Echo Bravo will open the show. Doors will open at 7:00 p.m. in the Council Fire Room of Davies Center. The show is open to all ages.

Rilo Kiley’s audiences have a strong tendency to fall in love on the spot. Perhaps it’s their beaming faces or laid-back, West Coast attitudes. Or maybe it’s just their uncanny knack for designing nuanced pop songs and performing them with flair. Maybe it’s lead singers Jenny Lewis and Blake Sennet‘s adorable onstage banter and scissors-sharp wit. Whatever that little something extra is, Los Angeles, CA’s Rilo Kiley has it times ten.
Eclectic electric twang meets masterful songwriting on The Execution of All Things, Rilo Kiley’s second full-length album. Take Offs and Landings, their 2001 debut on Seattle’s infamous Barsuk label, was met with adoration from critics and audiences alike. With Liz Phair narrative sensibility, Bettie Serveert compositional beauty, and Beachwood Sparks sunshine, Rilo Kiley’s latest is a lyrically dense treasure that will have you searching for the story behind the evocative songs.
Jenny Lewis, lead singer of Rilo Kiley, is a vocalist for The Postal Service, that features Ben Gibbard of Death Cab for Cutie and Jimmy Tamborello. Her vocals have graced the albums of Bright Eyes and M Ward. Before heading to Eau Claire, Rilo Kiley will be opening for Coldplay in Las Vegas. Also, although unconfirmed, it appears you'll be able to catch Rilo Kiley and Franz Ferdinand as openers on Coldplay's summer tour.
Omaha-based Neva Dinova has been through several incarnations since 1992, when guitarist and vocalist Jake Bellows and bassist Heath Koontz began writing songs and performing. Its current lineup includes Bellows and Koontz, guitarists Mike Kratky and Tim Haes (who have been with the band since 1998), and drummer Bo Anderson (who joined in 1999). While remaining a "local band" for most of their history, the five-piece from Omaha, Nebraska developed a loyal fan base. As word spread, Neva Dinova built up an ever-expanding audience. Things are suddenly moving forward much faster for Neva Dinova.
Neva Dinova's self-titled CD has been met with praise from both critics and fans alike. "Coming off as a cross between a dreamy, ambient guitar-fronted project, a lounge act, and an Americanized U2, the five lads in Neva Dinova don't seem to falter too much" said All Music Guide's Kurt Morris. "Definitely an album meant for the more starkly emotional months related back to autumn and winter, this self-titled work shows that there's more going on in Omaha than some might think."
By day the members of local dance-punk-pop rock band, Echo Bravo work for music clubs, a magazine, a record store, and a bakery. By night they howl at the midwestern moon with a confident yet humble swagger of guitar and synth rock – with its head, and heart, in the right place. After a summer of love and line-up changes, they played their first show in late November of 2004 to a 200+ enthusiastic crowd at the Stones Throw in Eau Claire.
Drawing from a range of eclectic indie influences not usually cited by bands from Western Wisconsin, Echo Bravo produces a sound all their own among Chippewa Valley acts. All veterans of former Eau Claire bands with varying degrees of success, the members of Echo Bravo have earned their stripes in bands including Sled Napkin, Amateur Love, Dinner With Gregg, Vivian, and others.
Echo Bravo’s forthcoming EP was recorded in March and April of 2005 in the back room of Union Records. It is scheduled to be released in mid June.
Tickets are $5 and will be available only at the door. All proceeds of the show will benefit the AIDS Resource Center of Wisconsin. The show is open to all ages; proof of age is required for alcohol purchases.
The concert is sponsored by the University Activities Commission of the UW-Eau Claire Student Senate, Student Radio Initiative & Volume One Magazine.
