Phi Alpha Theta International Honors Society was founded on March 17, 1921. Lambda Omicron Chapter was installed at UWEC on May 24, 1966.
The purposes of this organization are: to promote the study of history, to recognize and encourage achievement in history, to establish and stimulate the exchange of ideas between students and faculty.
As an honors society of individuals who excel in the field of history, Phi Alpha Theta promotes the study of history not for its own sake but for the sake of using the study as a guide for the present and future. Santayana once said: "Those who do not remember the past are condemned to relive it." Phi Alpha Theta hopes to use the study of history as a guide for their future.
Membership is open to students who have completed at least 12 credits in history with a gradepoint average of 3.10 or better in history courses while maintaining a cumulative 3.00 in all courses, and who rank in the upper 35% of their class.
Phi Alpha Theta has at least one monthly meeting. Officers are elected each May and assume duties the following September.
