Funded by a federal TRIO grant, the Student Support Services program at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire provides participants with answers to questions and access to a wide range of academic assistance. The program offers eligible students such supplemental services as specialized academic advising, tutoring, career counseling, peer mentoring, and study skills instruction. In addition, the program provides some direct financial assistance in the form of grant aid.
There are more than 900 similar programs funded through the U.S. Department of Education at colleges and universities across the country. National studies have documented that these programs are successful in increasing the retention and graduation rates of participating students.
The mission of the Student Support Services program is to provide participants with individualized assistance that contributes to their academic achievement, enabling them to accomplish their educational and career goals.
As mandated by Congress, the students served must demonstrate an academic need for assistance and be from a family of limited income or a family where neither parent has received a four-year college degree. Participants also include students with disabilities. A total of 300 students at UW-Eau Claire currently participate, joining well over 4,000 other students who have been involved in this program since it was established on campus.
