General Suggestions

Some general areas of course modification are listed below. Many of these suggestions may benefit students without disabilities as well as students with disabilities:

  1. Inform all students about the availability of support services for students with disabilities by including a statement in your syllabus similar to the following:

"Any student who has a disability and is in need of classroom accommodations, please contact the instructor and the Services for Students with Disabilities Office."

  2. Begin lecture/discussion with an overview of the topics to be covered.

  3. Use the chalkboard, overhead projector, or PowerPoint to highlight key course material.

  4. Emphasize important points, main ideas, and key concepts orally in lecture.

  5. Try to provide assignments in writing as well as orally.

  6. Provide an opportunity for participation, questions, and review sessions to aid in mastering material and preparing for exams.

  7. Provide time during office hours for individual discussion of assignments, questions about lectures, and readings.

  8. Try not to talk toward the board while writing on it.

  9. Try not to stand against a window where seeing your lips and expressions and gestures might be difficult.

  10. In answering questions or engaging in class discussions, it is helpful to repeat student comments as necessary.

  11. Make sure duplicated materials are visually clear.

  12. Use of a variety of formats to convey course material--visual and auditory-- may be helpful. If possible, convey difficult material in several ways.
