Students applying for a Minnesota license must complete the Minnesota paperwork and submit it to Barb Solfest in the College of Education and Human Sciences for completion of the university certification officer section. She will complete it, obtain a certified copy of the transcript in a signed, sealed envelope, and return the application and transcript to the student.
The student must meet all of Minnesota's requirements for licensure, which could mean they will be a class or two shy of the requirements for licensing. Minnesota will issue a temporary license if necessary (depending on the major) and give the student 1-2 years to take the missing classes. Our grade/age ranges may not align with theirs, but ours are usually more comprehensive than theirs.
Prior to applying for the Minnesota license, the students need to take additional Praxis tests. They need to contact Minnesota for the details of which tests to take.
Students will only be able to be licensed in an academic area in their major. Minnesota no longer certifies minor topics. The UW-Eau Claire Education programs teach and certify for Wisconsin, and students need to contact Minnesota to check on their requirements if they plan on teaching there.
The College of Education and Human Sciences webpage has a link, http://www.uwec.edu/coehs/forms/index.htm, that lists forms of interest. One of the forms is titled Procedure for Applying for Initial Certification. The form includes a link to the Minnesota Department of Education: http://education.state.mn.us/mde/Teacher_Support/Educator_Licensing/Apply_Renew_License/index.html
