Students in the Department of Special Education are required to demonstrate competencies at each of the three gates. These gates are organized around the Wisconsin Teaching Standards and include Gate 1: Application for Admission to Program, Gate 2: Application for Student Teaching, and Gate 3: Completion of the Professional Semester. Information about the requirements for Gates 1 and 2 is provided on the Department of Special Education webpage and in additional descriptions shared in coursework. This document describes the Gate 3 requirements and the procedure for organizing your materials.
All comprehensive special education majors should follow these guidelines. Special education minors should follow the guidelines provided by the Curriculum and Instruction Department.
Gate 3 is a two-part process that uses products drawn from your student teaching experience, your reflections on your accomplishments, and specific requirements identified by your University supervisor.
Part One is comprised of the following items:
These items are to be submitted by all students and, as mentioned, individual supervisors may have additional requirements. Students should consult with their supervisors to identify the format for organizing these artifacts. The timing of submission will also be arranged with the supervisor and this will most likely vary across students and supervisors.
Part Two is the formal submission of products and written reflections organized around each of the ten Wisconsin Teaching Standards. For each standard, students should organize a section in a three-ring binder. The section should begin with a page that completely states the standard. This page should also include a statement by the student that describes how the artifact(s) relate to and demonstrate competency and growth in the standard area. It is very likely that students will include many or all of the artifacts submitted in Part One.
The specific due dates and location for submission will not be arranged with the University Supervisor but will be announced at the Student Teaching seminar during the Professional Semester. The final Gate 3 portfolio will be reviewed for completeness and will be available for return to students following the review.
