Please let me know if this interests you; we could definitely look into this.
At the meeting, we broke up into our telethon subcommittees. If you missed the meeting or are interested in joining a committee, please contact the committee ‘leader’ to find out what you missed.

Minutes from February 10, 2008
8 pm at Higherground
Next Meeting: Sunday, February 24th – We’re meeting at 5 pm to tour the Chippewa Valley Free Clinic and then going to Sammy’s for pizza! Please let me know if you need a ride there, there’s plenty of space.
Members in attendance:
Caitlin Hellmich, Kristin Hurley, Jenna Evans, Britney Diercks, Nicole Scharrer, Stacey Epping, Amy Wroblewski, Kelly Palmer, Andrew Simons, Alyssa Bollinger
Organization’s Presentations:
For those of you who were not there, we had invited the various organizations we had thought about donating the Telethon money to our meeting. Representatives from those organizations came to present their cause. Afterwards, we narrowed it down to three.
1. Family Resource Center- They serve families throughout Eau Claire teaching parenting skills, including parents in jail and at homeless shelters. There are few different programs they run. They have first time parent support with monthly visits, they have playtime for mother/pre-k child couples to get the child socialize with other children, and some parent “coaching” classes even for parents of kids in their teens. They are mainly funded through grants and United Way, but their budget is slowly decreasing. They would use the money donated by getting new parent education materials. They also have various ways that we, as a group or individually, could participate in such as childcare and playgroup prep.
2. Big Brothers Big Sisters- Most of you already know what this is all about; this organization pairs ‘bigs’ (high school and older) with ‘littles’ (younger children that need a mentor) to meet 2-4 times a month and just hang out, or work at their school with them. What we can do with the money we raise is sponsor an event for these pairs. The idea of having the event at Action City is what we would like to do, but we’re not sure of the cost of renting the place out for a night.
3. Hmong Mutual Assistance Association- They provide services for the Hmong people in our community. With immigration on the rise, their numbers are increasing. They give employee training, family strength, citizenship training, and a ton more to those in need. They usually hold an annual youth leadership camp for kids to learn and have some fun, but it just doesn’t fit in their budget this year. The money donated would cover a majority of the costs for this camp.
If you have any input on which to choose, please forward that to Andrew; we’re hoping to decide fairly soon.
Service Projects
The service committee has thought of a few projects we could do. Clean a highway, make cookies for the Bolton Refuge House, and a few others were mentioned.
That’s all for this week. We hope to see all of you on February 24th to have some pizza!

1. First order of business was orientation for new members -
The purpose of SOPHS is to recognize and cultivate outstanding academic and leadership accomplishment and potential. SOPHS members are selected and brought together to learn from one another while accomplishing something of significance for the campus and the community. Our traditions include participation in annual Honors Week activities and the banquet (April 26, 2008 – SOPHS Tickets are already paid for), our Telethon on campus television TV-10, which benefits an area non-profit (last year we raised $1500 for Chippewa Valley Free Clinic), and several community service activities.
Our primary time of activity is spring semester; fall semester usually only includes one service project and selection of new members.
Our committees are: Telethon (a committee of the whole – all SOPHS members serve in some capacity on the subcommittees of Talent and Contests, Publicity and Information, Solicitation of Donors and Prizes); Social; Service; and Scholarship. We will start filling in these committees at our next meeting.
