Student volunteers make a difference
at Longfellow Elementary School
Most weekdays, 30 to 40 UW-Eau Claire students spend time volunteering at Longfellow Elementary School in Eau Claire.
UW-Eau Claire volunteers' support allows the school to offer programming that would not otherwise be possible, said Holly Larson, Longfellow partnership coordinator. These programs are important to the students who attend Longfellow, a school where 70 percent of the students live in poverty and 30 percent are bilingual.
The volunteers represent a variety of academic programs from across the university campus. Some work in classrooms, others provide after-school tutoring. Another group of students participates in a program mentoring fifth-grade girls. Members of Blugold sports teams offer playground demonstrations, and the kinesiology department runs a before-school running club. In addition, members of UW-Eau Claire's Epsilon Alpha Chapter of the Alpha Xi Delta sorority have "adopted" the elementary school, and they donate time in many ways, including decorating for and chaperoning school dances, fundraising and working at monthly "Lighted School House" family nights.
