All candidates for the baccalaureate degree at the University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire must satisfactorily complete 30 or more clock-hours of approved service-learning activity. This requirement is intended to provide students with an opportunity to serve their community, apply knowledge gained in the classroom, enhance their critical thinking skills, and become informed, ethical, responsible, and active citizens. Service-Learning is a method that promotes student learning and development through participation in thoughtfully organized service experiences. These experiences are defined, planned, implemented, and coordinated collaboratively by students, the university, and the community. They offer students opportunities to apply their education in service to the community, which enhances their appreciation, understanding, and respect for others. At the UW-Eau Claire, service-learning activities may be incorporated into courses or they may be stand-alone co- or extra-curricular projects.
The Center for Service-Learning assists students, faculty/staff members and community project supervisors with designing and undertaking meaningful projects that afford both rich experiences for UW-Eau Claire students and substantial benefits for the community. The Projects section provides information for students, faculty, and community partners on finding, starting, and managing service-learning opportunities at UW-Eau Claire. The project proposal section within the Center for Service-Learning's online system provides a listing of all service-learning opportunities submitted by community partners. Students are not limited to these; in fact, many students formulate their own projects. Starting a service-learning project is done simply through filling out the online form and providing all the needed information after logging into the online system.
The News and Events section contains a wide variety of materials that may be useful to students, faculty/staff members, and community partners in learning about local service-learning activities and how you can get involved. News stories, including both local and national stories, relating to service-learning are often posted in the news section.
