WASHINGTON, D.C.--The Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy announced that applications for its FY 2000 national grant cycle are now available. The Foundation's mission is to establish literacy as a value in every family in America, and to support the development of family literacy programs where parents and children can learn and read together. Over the past 10 years, 204 such programs across the country have been awarded a total of more than $6 million. Program sites include homeless shelters, housing projects, Indian reservations, libraries, schools, community centers, and correctional facilities among others.

To qualify for funding, an organization must have maintained current non-profit or public status for at least two years as of the date of the grant application, demonstrated fiscal accountability, currently have an instructional literacy program that has operated for at least two years and includes one or more components of a family literacy program, specifically, literacy for adults, parent education, pre-literacy, literacy for children, or intergenerational literacy activities, and must propose a family literacy project that promotes families reading together.

Guidelines, the application, and additional information about the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy can be found on the Foundation's website: www.barbarabushfoundation.com. LITERACY

Fellowship Announcement: The Mamie Shaw Eason fellowship for College Students Involved in Literacy, sponsored by The Student Coalition for Action in Literacy Education and the Four Feathers Fund.

The Student Coalition for Action in Literacy education (SCALE) is a national training and technical assistance organization that supports the work of campus-based literacy programs and the leadership development of college students. Part of the School of Education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, SCALE advances the participatory literacy and social change work of college students and campus programs across the country.

SCALE is pleased to offer the 2001 Mamie Shaw Eason fellowships on a competitive basis to college students who are currently involved in literacy outreach and who are interested in working on literacy projects during the summer in Chapel Hill, N.C. the fellowships honor Mamie Shaw Eason, a primary influence in the life of one SCALES's founder. Ms. Eason, although not formally educated, embodied the principle that all people have the potential to teach and learn. These fellowships honor that tradition by supporting the volunteer literacy work of the young and emerging leaders and by encouraging them to consider professional careers in the literacy field. SCALE plans to select 2-4 Mamie Shaw Eason Fellows to work on the following project focus areas:

Program Management: fellows will research and produce resources materials on a variety of topics related to the management of campus-based literacy programs.

Tutor Resources: Fellows will explore issues related to tutoring adults and children, and create resource material on specific topics.

Fellows will work in SCALE's supportive office environment full-time for two months beginning in early June and receive a monthly stipend of approximately $750.00. SCALE will cover the cost of housing, provide access to laptops computers, and offer bi-weekly in-service training and reflection sessions for Fellows. In addition, Fellows will be encouraged to attend a national meeting or conference, at SCALE's expense, that is relevant to literacy, program management or other project-related issues.
