Citizen Action of Wisconsin, Eau Claire

Citizen Action's "got healthcare?" campaign shows candidates for President, State Legislature, and Congress that Wisconsin wants bold action on the healthcare crisis. Citizen Action needs students to increase voter turnout as well as promote healthcare reform. By putting the issue of healthcare reform at the forefront of current political discourse, Wisconsin will come closer to fixing its broken healthcare system. Students will connect with members as well as other people in the community. The project may involve an array of activities including placing yard signs near homes, event promotion, helping with event set-up, and increasing voter turnout. There may be other activities that students can complete, which may become apparent later on.

Community Day takes place every Tuesday from 3pm until 5pm at Valleybrook Church on Barstow St in down town Eau Claire. It is a place where low income and disadvantaged people can go to get free services that they would otherwise be unable to afford. We provide a range of services from employability training to free haircuts to health care enrollment and are currently looking to expand our services.

A student or group of students is needed to create an assessment and survey consumers at Community Day to determine needs that are not being met at this time. This student, or another service-learning student would then be asked to recruit service providers to set up a station on Tuesdays to offer their assistance to the consumers.

The essential one time task is to create a web page to collect and log pledges for a charity walk, run in the spring. Given the economic climate the foundation will be losing funds from existing sources and needs to expand its base to remain viable and serving the needs of clients in Western Wisconsin. The student and staff would look at comparable sites utilized for other organizations, polar plunge, st. baldricks, etc... To develop a plan. The student would then look to create a site that would meet similar needs, experiment with a test site and then launch the website. The staff at the epilepsy foundation would provide information about the event, the current workings of the website, any restrictions and would keep in touch on progress with the website. In addition, a long term position could be maintained by helping staff update and keep current the epilepsy foundation web page. A long term presence in utilizing medium such as facebook, myspace, twitter, etc... To build events into the future.

UWEC Teacher Education & Student Affairs

At both the national and state levels, institutions of higher education are working with the K-12 system to help more students aspire to and pursue a college education. Correspondingly, UW System participates in the Wisconsin Covenant Community and the KnowHow2GO program. Both programs support high school students who commit to high academic performance and pursuit of postsecondary education. However, a consistent, sustaining infrastructure does not yet exist for students who sign the Wisconsin Covenant. Without that support, many students do not have the necessary resources to successfully complete the program and gain access to college. Covenant to College Access Program (CCAP) will support the Wisconsin Covenant and the national KnowHow2Go program. UW-Eau Claire (UWEC) will partner with North, Memorial and Altoona high schools to recruit low income and diverse students from area schools to be part of CCAP. A cohort of 50 ninth and tenth grade students will be recruited in spring 2009. One of our primary goals is to retain the 50 high school participants and add 25 freshman students in the fall of 2009. We are looking to pipeline the current Line Up for College participants into CCAP in the fall of 2010. These students will be matched with UWEC undergraduate tutor/mentors (TM’s), participate in tutoring sessions, program activities throughout the spring semester (on campus visits, guest speakers, lab workshops, ACT prep, etc.), and complete a two-week campus immersion experience in June. As students progress through high school, they will continue to build skills and prepare for college matriculation by participating in UWEC’s existing precollege programs such as the ACT Prep Course, intensive academic programs, career exploration, admissions advising and financial aid workshops. TM’s are required to attend an orientation and training session prior to beginning their employment. Students will be introduced to the purpose of CCAP and become familiar with program guidelines and expectations. Although students will be meeting at local high schools or public agencies, UWEC staff (Teacher Education and/or OMA) will conduct site visits. Additionally, students will be asked to meet with CCAP staff at least once a month, or as often as needed, to discuss any concerns they may be having or offer feedback on their experience. TM’s will be required to complete a log report that includes hour’s worked and daily activities.

I need a group that can conduct research for me on other animal shelters in Wisconsin and surrounding states. Our shelter is looking at the long-term possibility of having a vet tech with surgical facilities on-site so that we can provide the majority of our veterinary needs for the animals in our care, in-house. Before we even think about that we want to collect some information from other animal shelters of similar capacity that DO have a vet on staff to find out what their start-up costs were and how much they spend annually on veterinary needs. We need to be able to see that it will be saving us money, or at least not costing any more money than we currently spend on outside veterinary care, before we take any steps to make it happen.

The project aims by helping those in poverty or struggle to consistently put food on the table by providing a nutritious meal 1-2 times a week. To make this happen we need these three main components taken care of, and that where you come in: 1) Food Recovery - Procure food from UWEC's Dining Operations and safely store it 2) Meal Preparation - Cook/prepare meals and package them for delivery the following day 3) Meal Delivery - Meals get delivered to the sites where they are needed. There is some time, if you so choose, to interact with the meal recipients. We'll be more than happy to train you in the various shifts, no cooking experience required! Once trained in, there will be minimal supervision- this is truly a student/volunteer operation. There are ample opportunities for scholarships, leadership positions, and becoming Serve-Safe certified. In addition to the shift aforementioned, there will also be periodic events that we encourage our volunteers to attend/volunteer at (e.g. Hunger Banquet, Brown Bag Challenge, charity cookouts, food donations, etc.).

Eau Claire County is involved in performance management for all county programs. In our department, we have nine programs which include all seven county parks as separate programs. One part of our performance management calls for our existing staff to distribute park surveys that we develop and have our park staff distribute to the public as they visit our parks. Our park needs volunteers to conduct one on one interviews with park patrons to conduct these surveys. Other than the summer months when the parks are the busiest, we have another program Tower Ridge that has it's heaviest use in the winter from cross-country skiing, but also is busy in the summer and fall with disc golf.

Youth Aviation Adventure was developed by the Ohio State University Aviation Department. The principle founders are Dan Kiser and Steve Wathen. Youth Aviation Adventure—Eau Claire is being developed by Jack Fay, who is a hobby pilot. The program fills a need in the Eau Claire community to educate young people about aviation and careers in aviation. The program also challenges youth to apply their knowledge of science and math to aviation concepts. We also hope to inspire kids to think big in terms of their careers no matter what direction that might be. As is the case this year, we hope to have a motivational speaker address the bigger picture of challenging kids to aim high. In its debut year, YAA-Eau Claire is working to bring Astronaut Story Musgrave to Eau Claire to speak to the participants about his space adventures, which include six shuttle missions. UWEC students will be involved in many aspects of the event, including working with local media to promote the event, and designing a web page. UWEC students will also help chaperone groups of students between learning stations on the day of the event, help to set up and tear down the stations, and help with a variety of other event planning and implementation functions. Martha Fay, assistant professor of organizational communication at UWEC, will supervise and advise the students on all facets of event promotion and volunteering. She has 25 years of experience in marketing, which included event planning and implementation for many different clients.

To do that they would like to establish an electronic newsletter tied to a web site. The purpose of this electronic newsletter is to establish regular communication where all who care deeply about the Chippewa Valley region can share insights into particular community issues or effective approaches to addressing such issues. This newsletter also seeks to create opportunities for face-to-face dialogue so that citizens of the region can take the time to understand one another, become knowledgeable of community history and dynamics, and build relationships. The newsletter endeavor has no predetermined projects or agenda. We hope that by sharing information and coming together to discuss common concerns, good things will happen.

UWEC Blugold Beginnings

At both the national and state levels, institutions of higher education are working with the K-12 system to help more students aspire to and pursue a college education. Correspondingly, UW System participates in the Wisconsin Covenant Community and the KnowHow2GO program. Both programs support high school students who commit to high academic performance and pursuit of postsecondary education. However, a consistent, sustaining infrastructure does not yet exist for students who sign the Wisconsin Covenant. Without that support, many students do not have the necessary resources to successfully complete the program and gain access to college. Blugold Beginnings (BB) will support the Wisconsin Covenant and the national KnowHow2Go program. UW-Eau Claire (UWEC) will partner with North, Memorial and Altoona high schools to recruit low income and diverse students from area schools to be part of BB. A cohort of 50 ninth and tenth grade students will be recruited in spring 2009. One of our primary goals is to retain the 50 high school participants and add 25 freshman students in the fall of 2009. We are looking to pipeline the current Line Up for College participants into BB in the fall of 2010. Students will be introduced to the purpose of BB and become familiar with program guidelines and expectations. Although students will be meeting at local high schools or public agencies, UWEC staff (Teacher Education and/or OMA) will conduct site visits. Additionally, students will be asked to meet with BB staff at least once a month, or as often as needed, to discuss any concerns they may be having or offer feedback on their experience. TM’s will be required to complete a log report that includes hour’s worked and daily activities.

UW-Eau Claire Nursing Dept

Simulation is an educational tool used in the Dept of Nursing. Often, nursing students practice nursing skills on mannequins. Some mannequins have computerized functions that simulate breathing, pulse, ect. Sometimes students need to practice a series of functions and a "scenario" is developed in which the mannequins provide real time voice responses because an operator is listening and providing the response. The Dept. of Nursing is currently not staffed to optimize the use of scenario's but is aware of a number of areas that could be increased with service learning assistance from students with a theater arts background. Areas for student involvement include: creating make-up wounds that can be applied to the mannequins, costuming consultation and then costume making (for quick change needs between different scenario's), learning basic background scripts and then playing and ad-libing parts for voicing scenario's.

Community Health Partnership, Eau Claire

Some of the members of CHP are developmentally disabled and need assistance and coaching to be involved in community activities. At the same time, these people may need to get out of the home for a while to provide respite for family members and caregivers. The project will focus on recruitment of students to provide respite services for family members/caregivers of members with developmental disabilities. We want to match the student caregiver to the member so that there is a good "fit" in terms of interests, so that it is an enjoyable and positive experience for both the member and the student. In working with Service Learning students, we hope to enhance relationship development and continuity of service for members.
UW Madison- WI Department of Health

We are interested in conducting tick surveillance in Eau Claire, Chippewa, Trempealeau and St. Croix counties during the 2009 gun deer season (Nov. 21 – Nov. 29). A pair of volunteers would go to a selected deer registration station, collect samples of ticks from deer being brought in and collect some information about where the deer was harvested. Ticks are collected from the head of the deer using forceps and put into a labeled collection vial filled with ethanol. We are hoping to get samples from 50 deer per registration station. This is a two day project to qualify for a 15 hour service learning project. Volunteers would be expected to go to one station on Saturday and another station on Sunday (there is the possibility of doing the second day the following Saturday or Sunday). Volunteers would spend approximately 6 hours at each station (9 AM until 3 PM). Each pair of volunteers will need to provide their own transportation. Reimbursement for gas mileage and lunch will be provided. A mandatory training session (1 hour) will be conducted sometime during the week of Nov. 14. At this time the materials needed to conduct the tick surveillance will be handed out. Dates Needed: 11/21/09 through 11/29/09. We are looking for 10 students to help.

MN Masters Swimming Group

We seek to develop a new logo for our organization. We have requested ideas from members for the past 2 years and no one has stepped up with anything substantial. I have a few ideas of what this should or might look like but have very little artistic talent to devote to this project. The logo would be used on the web site, on clothing that is sold at meets, on T-shirts that are given away as participation awards at events. A couple of thoughts -- somehow have a blue heron/lake type bird along side or on a swimming lane marker with the wording of Minnesota Masters Swimming and somehow have an active swimmer figure involved. We would like to have a 2 color +/or four color format with black and white also available. Dates Needed: 10/21/09 through 3/1/10.
