After hours of reading and arguing on behalf of our favorites, the judging for 2007 Children's Writing Contest was completed. Sigma Tau Delta's own VP Megan Bell is studying in Harlaxton, England this semester and has agreed to share some of her thoughts with us. It's a great read for anyone who's wished to go overseas or has and misses it! Click above for Megan's impressions on her experiences this semester. Great news! The Theta Zeta Chapter has just been selected as a 2006 Outstanding Sigma Tau Delta Chapter. There are over 600 chapters internationally, so this award is quite an honor. We will receive the award formally (a plaque and a check) at the national convention in Portland, Oregon, in late March. This award underscores the hard work of the active Sigma Tau Delta members in the service projects, the writing contests, the book sales, and the English community involvement. Special acknowledgment is due to Dan Hardy and Gloria Hochstein, who worked many hours last fall to write the application to be considered and to assemble all the documentation required. This semester STD is proud to be in its 50th year at Eau Claire, and we have lots of things planned. -We will host a number of film discussions in cooperation with WAGE (Women's and Gender Equity Center) and UAC Films ( University Activities Commission Films). -A benefit concert send books to schools overseas. -Faculty speakers at many of our meetings for information and entertainment. -Our Annual Children's Writing Contest. This year, for the first time we will be expanding the contest to high school students, which should be a lot of fun. Spring 2006Fun at the 2006 STD Convention Recognition for Eau Claire STD Chapter Eau Claire's Theta Zeta Chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, the English Honor Society, has just been named a 2006 Outstanding Sigma Tau Delta Chapter. Fall 2004-Spring 2005From the Advisor, Gloria Hochstein From March 16-20, four of UWEC’s Sigma Tau Delta students and I attended the national Sigma Tau Delta convention in Kansas City, and UWEC’s students took the convention by storm. From the Advisor, Gloria Hochstein At the Student Leadership Recognition Awards Ceremony on February 17, 2005, two of our Sigma Tau Delta leaders, Rachael Amundson and Dan Hardy, were recognized as nominees for Student Leadership Awards. White Sand and Silver By Julianne Johnson From the Advisor, Gloria Hochstein For more than five years now, the students of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire’s Theta Zeta Chapter of Sigma Tau Delta have been sending hundreds of pounds of books to students at Kemerovo State University in Siberia, Russia. Here is an update on the impact that Sigma Tau Delta and the English Department has had on these student in Russia. A Pair of Homonyms and Corrective Lenses By Brock Janssen Jack Bushnell has written two children's books, "Sky Dancer" and "Circus of the Wolves." Both books have received awards. "Sky Dancer" was selected as a Children's Book of the Year by the Child Study Children's Book Committee of Bank Street College. "Circus of the Wolves" was named a Distinguished Book by the International Reading Association, among other awards. His most recent work, "Farm Crossings: The Adventures of Addie and Zachary." Fall 2002-Spring 2003From the Advisor, Gloria HochsteinOur membership in the local and national Sigma Tau Delta organizations has continued to grow tremendously in the past few years. A dynamic group of students participate locally, and again this year ten students were accepted into the national Sigma Tau Delta organization. Fall 2001-Spring 2002
