AWARDS AND RECOGNITIONSTo feel most beautifully alive means to be reading something beautiful, ready always to apprehend in the flow of language the sudden flash of poetry. ~Gaston Bachelard 2008 Eau Claire's chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, Theta Zeta, was again selected as an Outstanding Sigma Tau Delta Chapter. There are over 750 chapters internationally, so this award is quite an honor. They received the award (a plaque and a check) at the international convention in Louisville, Kentucky, in late March, 2008. This award underscores the hard work of the active Sigma Tau Delta members in service projects, writing contests, book sales, and the English community involvement. Special acknowledgment is due to Stephanie Schiefelbein who worked many hours to write the application to be considered and to assemble all the documentation required. In February, 2008, the Theta Zeta chapter was selected at the Student Leadership Recognition Awards Ceremony as one of two student organizations to receive the 2008 Student Organization Award. Sigma Tau Delta received a nice plaque and $100 check for "distinguished service to campus and community, creative programming, and involvement in the university." The plaque can be seen in the Kate Gill Library alongside the organization awards from 2005 and 2001,
Eau Claire's chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, Theta Zeta, has just been selected as a 2006 Outstanding Sigma Tau Delta Chapter. There are over 600 chapters internationally, so this award is quite an honor. They will receive the award formally (a plaque and a check) at the national convention in Portland, Oregon, in late March. This award underscores the hard work of the active Sigma Tau Delta members in the service projects, the writing contests, the book sales, and the English community involvement.Special acknowledgment is due to Dan Hardy and Gloria Hochstein, who worked many hours last fall to write the application to be considered and to assemble all the documentation required. You can read the letter that was sent with this great news here. Great job everyone! Spring 2005 Ruth Cronje’s collaborating student researchers took First Prize at the Student Research Day. The judges deemed their Evidence-Based Medicine project to be the best entry in the “Business and Professional Studies” category. Congratulations to Ruth and her students Lindsay Duwell, Rebecca Hutchinson, and Danielle Aanenson. Colin Marlaire successfully defended his dissertation at Marquette about a week ago. You can now refer to him as Dr. Marlaire without causing him distress. John Hildebrand’s new essay collection, A Northern Front, has just been published by Borealis Books. From March 16-20, four of UWEC’s Sigma Tau Delta students and Gloria Hochstein attended the national Sigma Tau Delta convention in Kansas City, and UWEC’s students took the convention by storm. Rachael Amundson, Dan Hardy, Andrew Kerbel, and Traci Thomas-Card presented two panels on fund raising and a panel on running a children’s writing contest, and Dan and Andrew read creative works. Then at the business meeting, Traci Thomas-Card was elected as Student Representative to the Midwest Region, and Dan Hardy was elected as Associate Student Representative to Sigma Tau Delta for the Midwest. I have been told that this is the first time in Sigma Tau Delta’s history that the SR and the ASR for a region were both from the same school. Since UWEC now has 2 of the 12 student reps nationwide, the Regents of Sigma Tau Delta have asked if we would be willing to host a small regional conference in the fall of 2006. The plaque can be seen in the Kate Gill Library alongside the organization award from 2001, and the money will be used to fund the Children's Writing Contest. The award was earned by the hard work of Rachael and Dan and Traci and Andrew and Marah and David and the other involved students in the organization. In addition, two of our Sigma Tau Delta leaders, Rachael Amundson and Dan Hardy, were recognized as nominees for Student Leadership Awards.
Spring 2000 Erna Kelly has been awarded a sabbatical leave for spring 2001 to work on "Margaret Cavendish for the Millennium: An Annotated Bibliography of Twentieth-Century Criticism." Spring 1999 Max Garland has just been awarded the Bush Artist Fellowship. This fellowhip will give Garland a year-long leave from teaching to work exclusively on his writing. Deb Barker and Jack Bushnell have been awarded grants to support research and creative activities during 1999-00 fiscal year. Barker’s research is "Tracking the Memories of the Heart: Approaches to Teaching Louise Erdrich's Tales of Burning Love. October 10, 2008 A Scholarly/Personal-Narrative Essay for a Literary Quarterly." Both Faculty Grants Scholars have been awarded partial reassignment of time from teaching or related duties to grant-sponsored activities. Charles Hanson has been awarded a sabbatical leave for Spring 2000 to work on "Contemporary Travel Writing: Theory and Practice." John Hildebrand has been awarded a Wisconsin Arts Board Fellowship for literature. His short essay "The Appraisal" was recently read on Minnesota Public Radio. Also, "Along the Delta" from his first book appears in "The River Reader." Tess Onwueme traveled to Greece to serve on the International Board of the International Women Playwrights. Her play The Missing Face will be produced in Athens/Delphi, Greece, next year at the Millennium Conference of the International Women Playwrights. On Feb. 6, The Kennedy Center featured Onwueme as a guest speaker to the Writer's Forum. Onwueme's presentation focused on "The Playwright In Search of Audience."
