Welcome to the website of the
UW-Eau Claire English Department's
Online Newsletter, The Word.
The greatest gift is a passion for reading. It is cheap, it consoles, it distracts, it excites, it gives you knowledge of the world and experience of a wide kind. It is a moral illumination. ~Elizabeth Hardwick
Our purpose here is to amuse, bemuse, and entertain, not to criticize, though we are not discouraging the occasional parody or satire which might accidentally instruct as well. We accept contributions from students, graduate students, alumni, faculty, and staff of UW-Eau Claire. These contributions can include the witty and amusing turns of phrases of the coffee room and the classroom, the unintentionally funny bloopers on handouts and memos, the amazingly clever words your children coin, the almost as clever repartee of colleagues, those rare administrative linguistic obfuscations, and the like.
Your contributions are what make this fine website successful. Submitting to The Word is a wonderful opportunity for you to get your hidden scribblings out where others can enjoy your creative wit and talent. Please send submissions to Krista Hebel (hebelkl@uwec.edu). And snoop around the "Articles" page and the rest of the site to see what your peers have to offer!
Also make sure to check out what's going on in the English Department and in the Theta Zeta chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, the English Honor Society and The Word's parent organization. The members of the Theta Zeta chapter created and maintain this site. Also make sure to visit the English Festival website, where you can learn about the exciting events this years' Festivilians are planning for spring 2008!
Look here for the Fall 2007 issue of The Word.
The alumni newsletter, The Afterword, is written by members of Sigma Tau Delta and members of the English Festival Organization. The Afterword is mailed to UW-Eau Claire alumni who graduated with a major or minor in English. The most recent issue of The Afterword is now available as a PDF file.
