The Deadline for Submissions to the 2009 Writing Contests is March 28, 2009.

The awards ceremony for the 2009 Writing Contest is Wednesday, April 29, in Davies Student Center on the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire campus.

History

Since 1998, the members of Theta Zeta chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, the International English Honor Society, have managed the Children's Writing Contest, an annual project in which we take submissions from young writers and create a book of winning prose and poetry. For the first several years, the contest was open to K-8th grade students.

Four years ago, we reorganized the Children's Writing Contest and expanded the contest. We now have two contests, the Children's Writing Contest, for students in kindergarten to sixth grade, and the Young Adults' Writing Contest, for seventh through twelfth grade students.

This project is one of the most entertaining and enjoyable experiences for the members of the Theta Zeta chapter of Sigma Tau Delta. This past year we had over 700 submissions from all over western Wisconsin. Each grade typically has 2-3 winners (selected by members of the Theta Zeta chapter and other interested English students). Each winner receives a copy of the winners' booklet with his or her submission included, an age-appropriate book of prose or poetry picked by Sigma Tau Delta members, and a writing journal.

Submissions are typically due in early March. The winners are asked to attend an awards ceremony to be held in late April or early May during UWEC's English Festival. At this ceremony the winners receive their prizes and read their entries for the attendees.

We welcome all K-12th graders to submit their entries to Sigma Tau Delta as long as they follow some simple guidelines. Our entry form and guidelines are posted and may be downloaded from this page: Forms.
