January 23, 2003
5:00 p.m. HHH 410
The meeting was called to order at 5:00 p.m. by president Kristy Kutchenriter in HHH 410.
The following items were discussed:
- The mixer has been moved to Thursday, February 6. It will take place during our next meeting time, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., and will be at Professor Ruth Cronje's house. Members can meet by the elevators at 5:00 p.m. for walking or carpooling together.
- BOB (Blugold Organizations Bash) is next Wednesday, January 29, from 11:00 a.m. to 2 p.m. A sign-up sheet was passed around for manning the STD table.
- Local elementary school and English teachers were contacted during break about the writing contest. No submissions have come in yet, but e-mails will be sent to remind teachers within the next few weeks.
- Forty-five STD t-shirts were ordered today-short sleeve and red with black writing. The cost is ten dollars. If you did not order a t-shirt but would still like to purchase one, please contact Kristy Kutchenriter.
- This semester's book sale will be held during the English Festival, April 30-May 1.
- Other ideas for this semester include volunteering at the Eau Claire Children's Museum and the Polar Plunge.
The meeting was adjourned at 5:20 p.m. The next meeting/mixer will take place on February 6, 2003, at 5:00 p.m., at the home of Professor Ruth Cronje.

- Extra, extra, read all about it
We’re kicking off preparations for the book sale. There will be two sessions of book sorting and boxing—Thursday, October 24 and Wednesday, October 30. The session on Thursday will begin at 4:00 p.m. in HHH 410—see you there!
A book drive will also be held November 4-8. Boxes will be placed in Phillips Library and the faculty will be e-mailed to help with contributions. The actual sale will take place in the Davies Center—location to be determined—on November 10-11, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Questions? Contact Danielle Koehn.
Dues for membership in Sigma Tau Delta are $5/semester, or can we interest you in the screaming deal of only $7/year? Please give money to treasurer Erin Duffert or advisor Gloria Hochstein.
If you’d like to become a prized member of the national branch of Sigma Tau Delta, all you need is three semesters under your belt, a GPA of 3.0 or higher, and $30—that’s for life and just think of the benefits! All members receive copies of STD’s special journal, The Rectangle, and are eligible for multiple scholarships, internships, and writing opportunities. The deadline is approaching quickly; see Erin Duffert to give her your $30 and Gloria Hochstein to complete the application material (it takes less than five minutes, I promise). Visit the aptly named website, www.english.org, for more reasons to join.
Be sure to reserve the night of Thursday, November 7 in your calendar, because the members of Sigma Tau Delta are getting together to have a good time! One member proposed the new Java Café on Water Street. What are your ideas?
There was one possible design presented for t-shirts, which was approved by members in attendance. Color schemes and prices are still being determined and will be announced soon. How does red with black lettering sound to everyone?
Books are great…they’re even better when you win them. Starting immediately, every three hours of participation in STD gets you a raffle ticket (and meetings count as participation!). At the end of the year, there will be a drawing to win books, gift certificates, and other cool stuff. Get in on the action!
- The Word is always in need of articles. It doesn’t have to be extravagant; we’re looking for 200-500 words on book reviews, thoughts on classes or professors, or anything that’s on your mind. Bonus—every article earns you a raffle ticket! Send your ideas and stories to Beth Lauterbach.
The meeting adjourned at 6:00 p.m. The next meeting is TBA.
