2001-2002 Meeting Archives

April 18, 2002

All English students, faculty, and staff are invited to the end of the year picnic on Friday, May 10! The picnic will be held at Birch Pavilion in Carson Park from 5 p.m. until about 8 p.m. Sigma Tau Delta will provide hot dogs, buns, condiments, and drinks and plans to ask the faculty and other students to bring other dishes if they would. We will say goodbye to our graduating seniors, recognize new officers and national members, and present the Big Fish and Little Guppy awards.

The book drive for the book sale will take place beginning Monday, April 22 until the following Monday. If you have any books that you are willing to contribute, please place them in the box in the English department, HHH 405. The books will be sorted and organized on Monday, April 29. The book sale will be held during the two days of the English Festival, May 1-2, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. both days, outside the UW-Eau Claire bookstore in the Davies Center. If you are willing to make posters or work a shift of the sale, please contact April La Blanc. Thanks for your help!

The awards ceremony for the children's writing contest will be held on Wednesday, May 1, from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. Many thanks to the UW-Eau Claire bookstore for agreeing to donate the prizes!

There are still many projects to be completed before the award ceremony. We will meet on Tuesday, April 23 at 4:40 p.m. in HHH 410 to address and mail the kind letters of rejection to all non-winners and make photocopies of the winning submissions for the winner's booklet. If you are willing to help out, please contact April La Blanc so she knows how many to expect.

On Wednesday, April 24 from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., we will be putting together the photocopies of the winning submissions using the bookbinding machine. If you are available to help, please contact Kristy Kutchenriter.

If you have not been receiving the Sigma Tau Delta e-mails and would like to, please contact Anne Wendt to have your name added to the list.

Reminder: There is no meeting on Thursday, May 2, as it is the second day of the English Festival. Our next (and last) meeting of the semester will be Thursday, May 9 at 5:30 p.m. in the Kate Gill Library. We will hold officer elections and choose the winners of the Big Fish and Little Guppy awards. The Big Fish award recognizes an outstanding member of the English faculty who has contributed significantly to Sigma Tau Delta and the Little Guppy Award acknowledges the student who has done the most for the organization during the semester. The three officer positions open for election are president, historian, and PR/membership, so start thinking about whom you'd like to nominate! See you there!

Advisor Gloria Hochstein began by announcing that she has reserved Birch Pavilion at Carson Park for our end-of-the-year picnic, which will be held on May 10.

The members were reminded of the pizza/reading party on Thursday, April 4--the first Thursday after spring break--to read the submissions for the children's writing contest. Everyone is invited and we will meet at 5:30 p.m. to caravan to Gloria's home together. Thanks to everyone who e-mailed the schools to encourage more submissions!

We discussed prizes for the winners of the writing contest. Last year, books were given. For this year, we are considering journals-or both books and journals. Borders donated the books last year and we will check with them to see if they will consider donating again. Two winners per grade will be chosen and each will receive a prize, as well as a bound booklet of all the submissions. Amanda Fullan has volunteered to design a new cover for the winning submissions booklet.

Get ready for the bowling/pool social coming this Friday, March 15! Everyone will be meeting at 5 p.m. in Hilltop.

For those of you who like to write up the entire semester in your planner ahead of time, there will be NO MEETING on May 2, as it is the second day of the English Festival. Our last meeting of the semester will be May 9, the day before the end-of-the-year picnic. At that meeting, we will hold nominations and elections for officers (President, PR and Membership, and possibly Historian), the Big Fish Award, and the Little Guppy Award.

The Word is still in need of articles! Two members volunteered to write pieces and another proposed the idea of having book reviews/recommended reads as a regular feature. We welcome everyone's suggestions and will also be soliciting the faculty's help for this. If you've read something you can't wait to share, please contact Beth Lauterbach.

Our next meeting will be at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 21 in the Kate Gill Library. See you there!

President April La Blanc began by welcoming everyone back to the second meeting of the semester and reminding members that anyone interested in national membership must get the necessary information to her by March 7. National membership in STD is open to students who have at least a 3.0 GPA in their major, are ranked in the top 1/3 of their class, and have completed at least three semesters of college. The dues are only $30 and that's for life!

We have received a total of nine submissions for the children's writing contest so far and will be e-mailing all elementary and middle schools to encourage more submissions. A reminder to all who are looking up e-mail addresses to contact your schools by Friday, March 1. The deadline for receiving submissions is Friday, March 22.

The English department's online newsletter The Word is always looking for submissions. The Word consists of professor profiles, class reviews, featured writings, or just about anything you'd like to read! As English majors/minors, we all have writing samples on hand, so contact Beth Lauterbach for your chance to be published!

Next order of business: party! We formed committees to plan our social events for the semester. We'll be meeting at Hilltop at 5 p.m. on Friday, March 15 for a bowling/pool extravaganza. Our end of the year picnic-a time of fun, food, and ceremony-will be held on Friday, March 10, and Gloria is looking into securing a pavilion for us in Carson Park. If you have ideas, bring them to the next meeting or contact April La Blanc.

We finished up the meeting by choosing and packing up four boxes of books to ship to Russia.

Our next meeting is at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 7, in the Kate Gill library. Thanks for reading and we'll see you there!

February 7, 2002

The first meeting of the semester was held on Thursday, February 7, at 6:00 p.m. in the Kate Gill Library.

Overview of this semester's upcoming events:

  • Submissions for the children's writing contest have begun to arrive. The deadline for submissions is Friday, March 22, right before spring break. A judging/pizza party will take place within two weeks after the above deadline at Gloria's Hochstein's home.
The award ceremony will take place on Wednesday, May 1, from 4:30 to 6 p.m. in the Davies Theatre.
  • We will be sending books to Russia for their English language program within a few weeks. The organization and boxing of books will be at our next meeting.
  • We have book sales every semester. Our next book sale will be during the English Festival, and all proceeds also go to Russia.
  • There will be a bowling or some sort of social event early on in the semester-if you would like to help organize it or you have any ideas, please let us know!
  • End of semester picnic-this is to say goodbye to graduates, recognize new officers, and have some fun. We are checking into finding a park for the picnic.
  • Three officers positions will be opening up at the end of the semester-the president and two positions to take care of PR/membership responsibilities.
Also, if you are interested in working on "The Word" (the online newsletter for the English department) please contact Beth Lauterbach.

Reminders:

  • Please pay dues as soon as you're able-it's $5 for a semester and $7 for a year. Money can be given to our treasurer Danielle Koehn or to Gloria Hochstein.
  • When visiting Amazon.com, please link through the English web page (or here!). When you do, our chapter receives a small percentage of the costs. Every little bit helps. Thanks!
  • If interested in national membership in Sigma Tau Delta, please contact April La Blanc. A lifetime membership is a one-time fee of $30 and includes an annual journal, newsletters, and multiple scholarship/internship opportunities. The necessary information to apply is due to April by March 7.
  • Our regular meeting times will be on the first and third Thursdays of every month at 5:30 p.m. in the Kate Gill library on the fourth floor of Hibbard Hall.
  • Our next meeting is at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 21, in the Kate Gill library. We will box up books to send to Russia at this meeting.

October 4 & 18, 2001(Intro Meetings)

President April La Blanc began by welcoming everyone to the English Honor Society, Sigma Tau Delta. Our motto fits our acronym: "Sincerity, Truth, Design."  The officers introduced themselves and then everyone else did as well.

April also provided everyone with a background on STD which can be found on our home page as well as on the International Site. STD is also a good source for scholarships and English conventions, including the trip this school year to Boise, Idaho. Our local chapter does a yearly book sale and drive as well as extra services for English students like a Career Services Info Night, Student-Faculty Mixers, and more! We also participate in the annual English Festival, held here on campus. We organize a Children's Writing Contest and give prizes to the winners at the festival. Also, we try to get a trip going to see a play or other production in Eau Claire, or even the Twin Cities.

We also have publications that we work on. The Word is the English Department's newsletter. The Rectangle is the international STD's publication that all members receive if they have joined the international society. If you would like more information on joining, contact one of the membership officers or view our "Join STD" page.

At our Oct. 18th meeting, we formed committees based on what people were interested in helping out with. With your membership to STD, you must put in 5 hours of "service" time- which does include meetings.

  • If you are interested in helping with the book drive and sale committee, please contact Vice President Kristy Kutchenriter.

  • If you are interested in writing for The Word, please contact Historian Bethany Lauterbach.

  • If you are interested in helping update the web page, please contact Danielle Preston

  • If you have ideas for the mixer, please bring them to the next meeting, or contact President April Lablanc .

The Word consists of professor profiles, class reviews, featured writings, or just about anything you'd like to read!  The book drive recruits donations from professors and students to be sold after Thanksgiving. As for our mixers... if you've never seen an English major, minor or professor party down, you've never lived!

Thank you for reading the notes and see you next meeting!

Message from President Stephanie Hora on April 6, 2001

On Wednesday, April 26, Sigma Tau Delta will be sponsoring a faculty reading at 7:00pm in the Cabin in Davies Center in observance of Honor's Week. Be sure to attend!

This week's meeting (wednesday April 11) is going to be held at Laura Baures' house for the writing contest judging. There will be pizza!

Message from President Stephanie Hora on March 2.

Hi Everyone!
Thanks to all who attended the meeting last night. I do need to know though
how many people are for sure attending the Honors Banquet on April 28th. We
agreed that the chapter would pay $3.00 for each student to go so the
ticket would only cost $6.50 if you want to attend. There will be a buffet
and pretty good food so I hear...

So, if you are attending, I need to know by March 8th.

Also, I will be getting out the information on schools this weekend and if
you could all do your part by March 8th, I'd be appreciative and maybe even
bring a treat to the next meeting!

If you did not pay your dues by last night, you are NOT on the official
University roster for being a member of this organization. If you feel this
is a problem, let me know ASAP.

Have a great weekend everyone!
Stephanie Hora
Sigma Tau Delta President

Meeting Agenda Message from President Stephanie Hora on February 27.

On the agenda:

1. Final call for nationals (I have four on the list, bring your $26.00 and
we will get everything sent out)
2. Writing contest dilemma--what should we do?
3. Dues (please, everyone needs to pay Thursday)
4. Amazon.com fundraiser
5. Anything else?

As you can see, it could potentially be short but I would like to see as
many people as possible. I am sending in the final list of members to the
University and if you haven't paid by Thursday, you will not be on the list.

For those of you who have not heard, Sigma Tau Delta won the Student
Organization of the Year award! Also, Gloria (our advisor) won the Student
Advisor of the Year award! Join us to congratulate and celebrate!

See you Thursday!
Stephanie Hora
President, Sigma Tau Delta
