Minutes – Sigma Tau Delta

Present: Gloria, Dan, Megan, Theresa. Andrew, Stephanie, Christina, Hillary, Dana, Ann

Introductions of new members – welcome to Theresa, Hillary, Christina, Stephanie and Andrew!

Gloria printed and handed out scholarship and national conference paper submission information, and explained eligibility and requirements for submissions and for attendance at the national conference. It will be held in Pittsburgh from March 28, 2007-April 1, 2007. She urged that anyone who plans to attend should make hotel reservations ASAP. Further information is available on the website: www.english.org

Funding is likely to be provided by the university for those presenting at the national conference.

We discussed scholarship opportunities through the national Sigma Tau Delta organization. Gloria emphasized that there is a lot of money to be given, and that anyone from UW-Eau Claire who applies has a good chance of getting one of the many scholarships available, including a study-abroad award.

Midwest Regional Conference:
We will meet in the Penthouse from 5:00-7:00 PM on Thursday, October 19 for a pre-conference social. Any conference attendees arriving Thursday can meet and mingle, after which we’ll head over to Acoustic for the Chippewa Valley Book Festival Poetry Slam.

Discussed details to bring new members up to date on the conference – schedule, attending schools, banquet Friday evening with August Rubrecht (storyteller extraordinaire!). Gloria reminded anyone who wishes to attend the conference and/or banquet to register by tomorrow (Friday, October 06, 2006). There is no cost for UWEC students to attend the conference; a $10.00 charge for the banquet and entertainment. Everyone attending either or both, however, must fill out a registration form and hand it in to HHH 405.

Dan brought up the Children’s Writing Festival and asked for volunteers. Also plugged the Chippewa Valley Book Festival’s Writing Contest. Winners of the contest will give a reading at the Phillips Public Library on October 22.

Dan briefly mentioned our Books Over Borders activity, and that we will be hosting a benefit concert for BOB in the spring.

Next Thursday, October 12 there will be an officer’s meeting held in the Penthouse at 6:00 PM. Everyone is welcome to come and help put together registration packets for conference attendees.
