The Goals of Sigma Tau Delta

Sigma Tau Delta was founded by Judson Q. Owen on December 12, 1922 as the English Club of the Dakota Wesleyan University, Mitchell, South Dakota. As the club prospered, it attracted interest from other campuses, eventually prompting Owen to expand the club into an English national honor society.

Our ultimate goal as a society is to "promote the mastery of written expression, encourage worthwhile reading, and foster a spirit of fellowship among men and women professionally engaged in the study of or teaching of the English language and literature. It endeavors to stimulate among its members a desire to express life in terms of truth and beauty and to make first-hand contacts with literary masterpieces."

Theta Zeta Chapter Recognized for International Activities

In 2005 the Theta Zeta Chapter hosted an inaugural event for the Books Over Borders project. We hosted a benefit concert to send books to Escuela San Miguel, a school in Nicaragua. The Theta Zeta chapter is one of many businesses and organizations thanked for their donations.

For more information on the school visit their website.
"Without the hard work, sacrifice and donations from people like you, not even the first brick could have been laid to build Escuela San Miguel. So much progress has been made in the past few years.  We would like to thank everyone for their kindness and generosity towards the Projects for People mission"-from the Projects for People website.

We are proud to have been a part of this project. If you know of other such projects or service opportunites/locations that could use books, please contact one of our officers, or email engl56@uwec.edu.
