Instructional Methods

I teach using primarily group discussion to facilitate both student understanding and student ownership of the material.  Because discussion is so essential to the success of the course, students must come to class on time and prepared, having read and thought about the material.  We have about five hours with each other every week.  Expect to put it at least ten hours of preparation each week in order to be ready to contribute effectively to class.

Contributions Required for Your Learning to Occur

Because class discussions are so integral to expanding our thinking about what we have read--verifying some of our initial impressions, stretching our imaginations to encompass new perspectives, making connections across texts, etc.--each of our contributions, and by implication our attendance, is required in every class.  After five absences (excused or unexcused--I don't distinguish between them), three points will be deducted from the final grade for each subsequent absence.

Class begins on the hour.   I will close the door to the class that we can being work with our undivided and conscientious attentions to the readings.
