The Office of Multicultural Affairs (OMA) provides opportunities for African American, American Indian, Asian American (special emphasis on Southeast Asian), and Hispanic/Latino students who may not be served by “regular” campus resources because of cultural differences, the predominately majority nature of the university, the lack of role models from ethnic or racial backgrounds, or uncertainty about expectations.

OMA offers the following services:

• Recruitment/retention of multicultural students.

• Supplemental advising for multicultural students.

• Career exploration and leadership programs.

• Cultural programming, such as speakers, seminars, workshops, and conferences.

• Coordination of American Indian Awareness Week, Hmong Cultural Festival, Hispanic/Latino Celebration, and Black History Month Events.

• Pre-college programming for multicultural students, grades 6-12.

The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, in partnership with the Lac du Flambeau School District, the Lac du Flambeau Tribal Council, Lakeland Union High School and Nicolet College, works with Native American students beginning in third grade and following them through high school to prepare them to be successful in college. This holistic approach to academic preparation is built on reading, math, science and social studies tutoring to build the foundation for success and other activities that enhance self esteem, motivation and an appreciation of cultural heritage. Parents and the entire community participate in making GEAR UP a success.
