STUDENT DEVELOPMENT AND DIVERSITY MISSION

Student Development and Diversity professionals, in conjunction with other university staff, faculty and community partners, assist University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire students in reaching their unique potential in the areas of intellectual, personal, social, and cultural development. This is achieved by providing a variety of student services that include information sharing and advocacy, curricular and co-curricular offerings, professional development and training opportunities, as well as diagnostic and clinical services. These activities occur in the context of a liberal education enhanced by experiential learning and civic engagement.

GOALS :

Student Development and Diversity goals are to:

  • Deliver high quality information and services to students to help them develop adaptive habits and decision making strategies that enhance their academic performance, lend insight to their career development, inspire lifelong habits of wellness, and inform their interpersonal relationships.
  • Provide opportunities for students to explore their evolving identities in relation to other individuals and society.
  • Promote students’ continued development of ethical reasoning skills.
  • Collaborate with colleagues and students to develop policies and procedures that support a campus culture that acknowledges and values a variety of ways of seeing and being in the world.
  • Assist students experiencing academic and/or personal difficulty.
  • Provide information to faculty and staff that enhances their understanding of students and strategies to promote student success.
  • Develop programs that further the University’s goal of educational equity and access.
  • Advocate in the best interest of individual students and student groups.
  • Collaborate with faculty and other educational professionals to enhance teaching and learning.

VALUES :

Five core values inspire the work of Student Development and Diversity professionals.

Leading to Serve : We engage in activities that serve the goals and best interest of our students, colleagues and community - those that promote self actualization. Our success lies in the success of others.

Multiculturalism : We recognize and embrace the strength that resides in our human diversity, both culturally and intellectually. As a result, we strive to benefit from the inclusion of diverse perspectives and to become "more than the sum of our parts".

Continuous Improvement : Assessment lends direction and strength to our endeavors. It informs and motivates the effectiveness of our programming, and it supports our understanding of critical changes among the students and communities we serve, and the colleagues with whom we collaborate.

Integrity: We strive to model the highest levels of ethical behavior in our interactions with students and colleagues as well as in our research and assessment activities.

Advocacy: As agents of positive social change on campus and in the community, Student Development and Diversity professionals empower those who lack a voice on campus. As Paulo Freire wrote, “Washing one’s hands of the conflict between the powerful and the powerless means to side with the powerful, not to be neutral ”.
