Emergencies
Crisis Management PlanThe Office of the Student Development and Diversity has as one of its functions the task of responding to an urgent or emergency situation, which involves University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire students on campus, in the community, and in other locations as appropriate. Included in this Plan is a list of individuals who can be helpful to students experiencing crisis. It is desirable to have the individuals most immediately responsible for activities in their area alerted to serious situations. Crisis or urgent situation is here defined as a significant event or radical change of status in a person’s life, or as an unstable or crucial time, which requires special assistance or intervention. Types of crises likely to be found in the University environment include the following:
- Death (student, friend, family)
- Serious injury
- Mental health related events including involuntary detention
- Sexual assault
- Discipline
- Threats to the public welfare
- Attempted suicide
- Drug/alcohol related problems
- Assist the student (or students and others, including staff) or other involved individuals to best cope with and resolve the crisis they may be facing.
- To provide coordination with external agencies, including the media that may be involved with the University during the crisis.
- To provide communication and coordination internally within the University.
- To assist in post-crisis support.
During a crisis, the Office of the Student Development and Diversity (using a designated crisis manager) will work with and coordinate efforts with external agencies such as clergy, law enforcement personnel, family, or friends in assisting those affected by the crisis. The Office of Student Development and Diversity will also notify the appropriate University offices or individuals, and assist in the designation of an institutional spokesperson to the media.
A core group consisting of representatives from Counseling, Housing & Residence Life, Davies Center, Student Health Service and others will meet on a periodic basis to explore issues related to the Crisis Management Plan and Crisis Management effort. In addition, representatives from the emergency call list will meet once a year.
