Benefits of Being a Member of SAS

Whether you are simply considering continuing your accounting education or are a fifth year senior, being a part of SAS can be a great way to learn more about the profession and build your professional network. On top of the unique real life experiences that our speakers share, SAS members experience other benefits of being involved, such as…

A. Making your resume stronger

• Having SAS on your resume is a great way to set yourself apart.
• Recruiters see SAS and recognize someone committed to the profession and willing to go the extra mile.

B. Networking

• Each meeting features a different speaker, many of whom reach out to us because they want the opportunity to be on campus and meet students.
• Many of these presenters are also at Career Conference and Intership Mania, giving you an edge because you already know them.
• In addition to the general meetings, we plan other events which are designed to help our members get exposure to recruiters and get comfortable in a professional setting.

C. A great way to learn more about the profession and the local and regional firms.

• As noted above, many of the speakers are firms looking to hire Eau Claire students, and attending the meetings can give you a good look at what each company is like.

D. Being involved in SAS is also a great way to meet other students that share your interests.

Overview of Meeting

SAS offers students an opportunity to meet and learn about different accounting firms. With both private and public companies presenting, students can begin to learn about their different career options and opportunities. The speaker at each meeting spends the majority of the time talking about a certain accounting or career related topic and then some time at the end talking about his or her firm specifically.

Some of the firms who have spoken in the past include:
• Sentry Insurance
• Cargill
• RSM
• McGladrey
• SVA
• Wipfli
• Larson Allen
• Ernst and Young
• Baker Tilly

Some topics that have been discussed in the past include:
• Personal Experiences in Public/Private Accounting
• Forensic Accounting
• Home Buying and Financing
• Accounting Roles in Health Care
• Managing Business Risk
• Interviewing Tips
• Tips for Preparing for the CPA
• And more!

Not only are SAS meetings a great chance for students to get to know their peers, it is a great opportunity for students to begin expanding their professional network. SAS members will have to opportunity to speak one on one with accounting professionals before and after the regular meetings. The accounting professionals allow questions during their presentation, which gives members another chance to ask questions about the presented topic or the firm itself.
