Research Goal
To provide the Schofield family with critical soil-knowledge based information with which to make informed land-use decisions.
Research Objectives
Characterize soil variability across the study site
-- Select 8 soil pit locations in representative landscape positions -- Describe, photograph, and sample the 8 soil profiles exposed -- Analyze soil samples for particle-size distribution and organic car bon content
Identify limitations and limiting factors, if any, for specific land-uses.
-- Compare field descriptions with description of map units -- identify capability classes and make specific recommendations for:
-- agricultural land-use (row, specialty, greenhouse crops and pasture -- commercial timber species and suitable tree, shrub, and vine species for surburban landscaping -- suitability for restoration/creation of native prairie, upland gamebird habitat, and whitetail deer habitat -- suitability for restoration/creation of wetlands and migra tory waterfowl habitat -- recreational land-use (ranging from camping and picnick ing to golf courses) -- industrial and commercial construction -- residential development -- a source for material resources (sand, gravel, fill, topsoil; and terrace, levee, or diversion embankments)
