CSD 715 Library Research Guide

  1 The research process

Scholarly communication is a conversation among peers.
Some "standard terminology" of the research world:

citation; abstract; peer-reviewed;
serial
(usually a journal, but not always);
ISSN
; database; descriptors

Starting your own research

What is your question?
First, choose a topic in which you are interested,
and for which there will be plenty of studies and research materials.

Try these:

Building a research question
Developing a hypothesis or research question

2 Communication Disorders Core resources

Articles in databases, reference materials, web sites

Depending on the aspect of your topic, try:

Academic Search Elite (multidisciplinary; good place to start) (EBSCO)
Annual Review (Psychology)
Cochrane Library

ComDisDOME
ERIC
(EBSCO)
Linguistics & Language Behavior Abstracts (LLBA) LLBA tips
PsychINFO
(EBSCO)

Take advantage of database search tips.

It's worth your time to understand the database "architecture" and to fine-tune your searching. What kinds of truncation symbols are employed? How do I combine terms using search history? Does the database have a thesaurus? Are there links to related resources?

tip: use the Advanced Search option where available.

For example, in Academic Search Elite, you may use an asterisk *
as a truncation symbol speech therap* for a phrase
But, in Annual Review of Psychology you must put search phrases in quotation marks “communication disorders”
