Connecting to Network Drives from Campus Computers

While on campus, Windows computers will automatically connect to your H: drive and the W: drive (deptdir) upon login. Here is how to connect, or map, to the other drives.

For off-campus access to network drives, refer to Web Access to Drives or Connecting to a VPN.

NOTE: The majority of these instructions refer to MY COMPUTERMy Computer iconon the Desktop. Instead of the text My Computer, you may see your username followed by the computer name (e.g., SMITHA on LAB-BNP-1104C).

In order to access a network drive, you must connect or map the drive.

  1. On the Desktop, right click MY COMPUTER » select Map Network Drive...
    OR
    On the Desktop, right click MY NETWORK PLACES » select Map Network Drive...
    The Map Network Drive dialog box appears.

  2. OPTIONAL: From the Drive pull-down list, select the appropriate letter for the drive you are mapping
    EXAMPLE: If you are mapping to your department share, select S:

  3. In the Folder text box, type the address of the network drive

    Student Home Drive (H:) \\students\username$
    Staff Home Drive (H:) \\staff\username$
    Projects Drive (P:) \\mass.uwec.edu\projects
    Department Drives (S:) \\fs3\deptsh$
    Media Drive \\media.uwec.edu\sharename$
    People Pages (L:) \\lucy\username$
    Instructor & Student Drive (W:) \\cass1.uwec.edu\deptdir
    Departmental Software Drive (J:) \\cass1.uwec.edu\software
  4. OPTIONAL: To preserve this mapping each time you log on, select Reconnect at logon

  5. Click FINISH
    The drive is mapped and ready to be accessed.

  6. If prompted, to connect to the newly mapped drive, type your username and password, and click OK

  1. On the Desktop, right click MY COMPUTER » select Disconnect Network Drive...
    OR
    On the Desktop, right click MY NETWORK PLACES » select Disconnect Network Drive...
    The Disconnect Network Drive dialog box appears.

  2. From the Disconnect Network Drive dialog box, select the drive you want to disconnect

  3. Click OK
    The selected drive is now disconnected.
