The UW-Eau Claire computing environment provides multiple web resources and programs for students and faculty. Also available is ample technical support, help desks, workshops, and online documentation to assist students and faculty with standard software in General Access computer labs. This document is designed to answer frequently asked questions for both Windows and Macintosh users and provides numerous links to documents containing more information about certain subjects concerning the UW-Eau Claire computing environment.
In an effort to keep the campus networking secure, faculty, staff, and students must have a username and password to access their files and drives. Your username is the same as your email address. Typically, it is the first six letters of your last name followed by your first and middle initials. For example, if your name is Jane M. Doe, your username would be doejm and your email address would be doejm@uwec.edu. If you are having any problems with your username, contact the LTS Help Desk and they can look it up for you, or you can look it up yourself on the Eau Claire Campus Directory Search.
To access your own personal files and network drives, you must first log on. All UW-Eau Claire students have a network account that provides access to numerous resources through the computer and the servers. If you are using a computer in one of the General Access labs, you will need to log on using your username and password.
Windows: Logging On to an XP Station
Macintosh: Logging In to a Mac OS X Station
You must be sure to log off the computer before you leave; otherwise, other people can change settings on your account and delete important files.

NOTE: Once you see the log in screen, it is safe to leave the computer.

Windows: When you create a file while using a Windows computer, you have the option of saving it to external storage media or to your own network drive located on the UWEC network. Nobody has access to this network space except you; as long as you log-off when you are done, your files will be safe from other people using the computer.
Macintosh: For Macintosh users, logging on has the same effect as logging into a Windows computer; your files will be saved to your network drive and be safe from others using the computer as long as you log-off when done. You also have the option of saving to a floppy disk.
Yes, but first you will need to get connected to the Internet using an independent Internet Service Provider (ISP). Review your options detailed in the Help Desk website.
