Windows: Working with Scheduled Virus Scans

With Symantec AntiVirus, you can set up virus scans that run on your computer while most convenient for you, such as when you are at class, lunch, or work. If your computer is not turned on when the scan is supposed to start, the scan will take place the next time you log in.

With Symantec AntiVirus, you can schedule periodic virus scans at a time that is most convenient for you, such as when you are at class or work.

  1. Start Symantec AntiVirus

  2. To expand your options, in the left pane, click the plus sign next to Scheduled Scans

  3. Select New Scheduled Scan
    The Scan wizard appears in the right pane

  4. Select the desired scan type (Quick Scan, Full Scan, or Custom Scan)

  5. Click NEXT

  6. In the Name text box, type an appropriate name

  7. In the Description text box, type an appropriate description

  8. Click NEXT

  9. In the Frequency section, select Daily, Weekly, or Monthly

  10. In the When section, choose the day and/or time you want the scan to start
    NOTES:
    If you chose daily, you only need to select the start time.
    If you chose weekly or monthly, you must select a start day and time.

  11. Click NEXT

  12. Click SAVE
    The scheduled scan is now saved.

return to top Modifying a Scheduled Virus Scan

After you create a scheduled scan, you may find that you want to change its start time, change the drives it scans, or change the name of the scan.

  1. Start Symantec AntiVirus

  2. To expand your options, in the left pane, click the plus sign next to Scheduled Scans

  3. Select the scan you wish to edit

  4. In the right pane, click EDIT...
    The Scan dialog box appears.

  5. To change the settings for Quick Scans
    1. Select the Quick Scan tab
    2. Click OPTIONS...
      The Scan Options dialog box appears.
    3. Make the desired changes
    4. Click OK

  6. To change the schedule of the scan
    1. Select the Schedule tab
    2. In the Frequency section, select Daily, Weekly, or Monthly
    3. In the When section, choose the day and/or time you want the scan to start

  7. To change the name and description of the scan
    1. Select the Name/Description tab
    2. In the Name text box, type an appropriate name for the scan
    3. In the Description text box, type an appropriate description of the scan

  8. Click OK
    The changes are saved.

When you no longer want a scheduled scan, you can delete it.

  1. Start Symantec AntiVirus

  2. To expand your options, in the left pane, click the plus sign next to Scheduled Scans

  3. Select the scan you wish to delete

  4. From the File menu, select Delete
    A confirmation box appears.

  5. Click YES
    The scheduled scan is deleted.
