To ART and ARTH Course Descriptions

Honor Societies and Student Organizations:

Students may participate in several student organizations: Art Student Association (ASA), Designer’s Ink, and the Art Education Club. NOTA, the campus art and literary magazine, welcomes students’ art entries.

From earliest times, human beings have given meaning to life through artistic expression. In our contemporary world, visual awareness and the communication of visual ideas have become increasingly significant. The Department of Art & Design responds to the needs of a visually-oriented world through instruction in graphic design, studio art, art history, art education, and the exhibition of art. The faculty’s role is augmented by a program of visiting artists and designers who offer their viewpoints to students and the community at large. The Foster Gallery in the Haas Fine Arts Center serves as the showcase for well-known visiting artists as well as faculty and students.

ADMISSION TO ART & DESIGN LIBERAL ARTS PROGRAMS

All students desiring to be Liberal Arts Art majors enter the department’s programs and courses as 36-credit Art: Liberal Arts majors (Code 020-201). Students who wish to remain in this major do not have to take the Foundations Review, but may do so as an advisory procedure. All applicants for admission to the liberal arts comprehensive majors must satisfactorily complete the Foundations Review and be granted acceptance into the particular major and selected area of emphasis. This includes the Comprehensive Major associated with the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) or Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree as well as the Comprehensive Major associated with the Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) degree.

The Foundations Review is administered once each semester by the Department of Art & Design. Typically, a student takes the Foundations Review in the same semester in which the student will complete the Art Foundations studio course sequence (Art 107, 108, 109, 110). The review consists of students presenting a prescribed portfolio of works produced in the four Art Foundations studio courses. At the completion of the review, Art & Design faculty assign an objective score to each applicant’s portfolio according to the competency criteria defined by the Review Evaluation Form. These scores result in a ranking of applicants. In certain areas of emphasis, competition for the limited seats available in courses is high, and thus a quantitative cut-off is imposed allowing only a finite number of students to be approved for acceptance. This quantitative cut-off ensures timely completion to degree for students.

The Bachelor of Fine Arts degree is a nationally recognized degree with high standards for excellence in art and design. Applicants for the B.F.A. degree must meet a higher standard of competence and ability as adjudged by Department of Art & Design faculty. Students seeking the B.F.A. degree must enter with and maintain a 3.00 GPA in Art and Art History courses to graduate in this degree program.

PORTFOLIO REQUIREMENT

All art majors are required to develop a portfolio containing selected examples of their work in order to participate in the various reviews. These reviews are established to help advise and assess the development of student work. The Foundations Review serves as the entrance procedure into all liberal arts comprehensive degree programs.
