Special Undergraduate Students
The following information is for non-degree-seeking students who
plan to enroll for undergraduate credit only. If you wish to earn graduate
level credit, refer to the Graduate Student
information page.
How to Register as a Special Student *
*NOTE: These directions do not apply to high
school specials or tuition-free auditors. High school specials should contact
the Admissions Office and tuition-free auditors should contact the Registrar's
Office for specific information.
Step 1. Complete a Special Student form. Although
forms can be completed at the time of registration, it is recommended that
Specials submit completed applications at least one week prior to
registration in order to facilitate the registration process. Forms can be
obtained in any of the following ways:
-
Access a down-loadable Special
Student Application form on the
UW-Eau Claire Registrar's web site. After printing the
application, complete and sign it, and send or bring it to Registration
Services, Schofield Hall 128, UW-Eau Claire, P.O. Box 4004, Eau Claire, WI
54702-4004. The Payment Plan Agreement
is available through the Business office and must be submitted with the Special
Student form.
-
Apply online using an electronic application. An
interactive Special Student form can be accessed at
http://apply.wisconsin.edu. Your information will be
electronically transmitted to the University overnight.
-
Call Registration Services at (715) 836-2425 to request a form
to be mailed to you.
Step 2. Submit the required $100 down payment (exception:
summer session down payment is due after
registration) along with a
signed Payment Plan
Agreement form to the Business Office,
Schofield Hall 108. The Payment Plan Agreement is appended to the Special
Student Application and will print out after the application (6 sheets total).

Eligibility
If you wish to enroll in classes, but do not intend to pursue a
degree, you may register as a "Special" student. You must have graduated
from a recognized high school or had the educational equivalent. No formal
admission is required prior to registration. Because of the demand for
courses and limitations on the number of students allowed to enroll at UW-Eau
Claire, the University places the following restrictions on Special student
registration:
(1) Special students are limited to a maximum of six
credits (or two courses if credits exceed six) per semester.
(2) All students who have been denied
admission/readmission may not enroll as Special students in the semester for
which they were denied admission or readmission.
(3) Students on academic suspension from UW-Eau Claire may
not register as a Special student.
4) Special students are not eligible for financial aid.
Exceptions to Special student enrollment policies must be
authorized by the Director of Admissions, or for academic suspensions by the
dean of the student's college.
Advising
The office of Advising
and New Student Initiatives, Schofield Hall 226 (715-836-3487), provides
advising for special students and has information about the special student
status. Older-than-traditional-age students may also contact the
Non-Traditional Student Adviser , Schofield
Hall 226 (715-836-3259) for assistance.
Adult Student Welcome
Returning adult students at UW-Eau
Claire can attend an Adult Student Welcome Program to meet other
nontraditional students on campus and to get oriented to a variety of important
campus services.
See
the Nontraditional Student Services web page.
Auditing
Courses
Special students may audit courses for
no credit. As an auditor, you may attend classes, participate in class
activities, and receive textbooks.
Auditors must consult the instructor
of the course to determine the conditions for a successful audit. Upon
successful completion of an audit, a mark of "V" will appear on your record.
Failure to meet the instructor's conditions will be recorded as "UV"; withdrawal
from the course will be recorded as "WV".
Fees. Special auditors who are
Wisconsin residents pay 30% of the usual tuition fee. Non-resident
Specials will be assessed 50% of the non-resident tuition fee. All
auditors must pay campus fees and any special course fees in full. Refer
to the Fee Schedules and
Residency pages for specific fee charges and for the definition of Wisconsin
residency for tuition purposes.
