Information for Tuition-Free Auditors

Definition of Tuition-Free Auditor:  Residents of Wisconsin who are 60 years of age and older or who meet certain disability requirements may audit courses on a space-available basis at no charge for tuition.

Fee Charges:  Although there is no charge for tuition, other fees may be charged.  All auditors must pay any special cost-based course fees (e.g., chemistry course breakage deposit).  Also, full campus (segregated) fees will be assessed for issuance of a University ID card, which entitles the holder to use rental textbooks and other campus services subsidized by segregated fees (e.g., recreation programs, health services, children's center, city bus pass, Davies Service Center). Tuition and campus fees are not waived for any course(s) taken for credit.

Restrictions:  This privilege does not apply to non-credit courses offered through Continuing Education or courses designated as "no-audit" by the departments.  Those courses appear in the Class Schedule with the notation, "Audit enrollment not allowed."  Registration begins on the first day of classes for the term and must be completed by the published course-add deadlines.  Audit registration cannot be changed to credit registration after the second week of class.

Proof of Eligibility:  Persons 60 years of age or older as of the first day of classes must show proof of birth date (e.g., copy of driver's license or birth certificate).  Persons with disabilities who are receiving disability insurance benefits under either the federal Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program or the federal Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) program must provide a copy of one of the following: (1) a Social Security Award Certificate with a "disable" benefit code of "HA" or "W" following the claim number, or (2) a Medicare Card if the recipient is under age 65, or (3) a Medical Assistance Card with a "PO" preceding the recipient's social security number.  Wisconsin residency is determined under the provisions of section 36.27(2)(e) of the Wisconsin Statutes.  Registrants must provide information on the registration form attesting to their status as bona fide residents of Wisconsin for at least 12 months immediately preceding the beginning of classes.
