(See List)

Pre-Program Phase

 1. Declare major and minor (Pre-Education Status).

Take basic general education courses required for your major including Eng 102
with at least a grade of C (not C-).

 2. Pass the Praxis I (Pre-Professional Skills Test -PPST).

Take the Praxis I as soon as practical because it is a prerequisite for CI 203 (Exploring Schooling in Grades 1-8).  This test is required by the State of Wisconsin for all teacher candidates.  Passing test scores must be received by UW-Eau Claire's Academic Testing Services office, Schofield Hall, Room 226, 715-836-5522, prior to registering for CI 203.  Passing scores are: Mathematics 173, Reading 175, and Writing 174.

3.  Complete CI 203 (Exploring Schooling in Grades 1-8).

To be eligible to enroll in CI 203 a student must meet the following criteria:

  1. Pre-education status
  2. Grade of C or better in ENGL 102
  3. completed at least 14 credits
  4. GPA of 2.75 or higher
  5. passing scores on the Praxis I (Pre-Professional Skills Test - PPST)

(Enrollment in CI 203 is limited to the first 75 students.)

** The UW-College grade point can be used to establish a resident grade point.  Contact Dr. Dwight C. Watson at 715-836-2013 to discuss.

NOTE: Keep in mind that a minimum GPA of 2.75 (residential and total) per semester is required for licensure in the State of Wisconsin.  In recent years, it has been necessary to maintain a GPA of 3.00 or higher for admission to program.

4. Admission to the Teacher Education Program in the College of Education and Human Sciences for Middle Childhood through Early Adolescence
(MCEA) grades 1-8

The admission process for the Curriculum & Instruction (CI) programs assesses candidates’ progress toward meeting the Wisconsin Standards for Teacher Development and Licensure as a mechanism to determine acceptance into the programs and continuing progress through the programs.  The admission process consists of three gates:

Gate 1    Admission to program

Gate 2    Admission to professional semester

Gate 3    Recommendation for licensure

Note: All students majoring in MCEA in the College of Education and Human Sciences are considered pre-education majors until they have fulfilled the requirements for the pre-program and have been accepted into the Teacher Education Program. Admission to this program is SELECTIVE and therefore cannot be guaranteed.  Since there may be more students applying than there are resources available, enrollment to program is limited to 56 students per semester.

For additional information on admission to the program as well as the Middle Childhood through Early Adolescence major go to http://www.uwec.edu/ci/MCEAMainPage.htm and click on the MCEA Handbook link.

College of Education and Human Sciences
Glossary of Terms

Middle Childhood through Early Adolescence (MCEA) – The MCEA major places a strong emphasis on the liberal arts plus a certifiable minor in a teaching content area.  Students who complete this major will be certified to teach all content areas in the elementary classroom and their minor content area.  Wisconsin teaching licensure grades 1-8.

Minor:  Certifiable teaching minors are required for all MCEA level students except for students who declare dual majors in Special Education (Sped).  Minors available are in social studies, language arts, science, math, library science, foreign languages, TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of other Languages), geography, theatre arts, and special education-learning disabilities.

Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST), Praxis I:  The Praxis I, a basic academic skills assessment in math, reading and writing, is required by the State of Wisconsin for all teacher candidates and must be completed and passed prior to registering for CI 203 (Exploring Schooling in Grades 1-8)

Praxis II (Test #20146): Praxis II is used to verify candidates’ knowledge of the subjects they will teach, as well as general and subject-specific pedagogical skills and knowledge.  Proof of having taken and achieved passing scores on the Praxis II is required before students can enroll in the professional semester (student teaching) and for recommendation for teaching licensure in the state of Wisconsin.

Portfolio:  A portfolio is an organized collection of documents, which provides evidence of the wide range of knowledge, skills and dispositions that you have developed as a growing professional, and demonstrates progress toward mastering those represented further by the goals of the MCEA program.  Specific documents and artifacts are required at each gate.  All artifacts should be preceded by an explanation of the relevance of the document to meeting the Wisconsin Standards.

Pre-Program: This refers to the time students must meet specific requirements, including enrollment and successful completion of CI 203 (Exploring Schooling in Grades 1-8) before applying for admission to Program.

Program: The Professional Education Program means the sequence of courses included in the baccalaureate degree or advanced program for preparing professional school personnel for licensure in the State of Wisconsin.

Field Experience:  Students are assigned to schools and classrooms at specific points in the pre-program and program to observe, assist the classroom teach, and ultimately to teach.  The amount of time spent in the elementary/middle school classroom increases from several hours in CI 203, four full weeks during the Block, to an entire semester during the Professional Semester (student teaching).

Block:  A series of professional courses taken together during one semester. Working in teams of two, students spend four full weeks in the schools applying theory to practice during this semester.  Methods courses include:

CI 304 – Classroom Practices
CI 305 – Reading Curriculum and Instruction in Grades 1-8
CI 306 – Mathematics Curriculum and Instruction in Grades 1-8
CI 307 – Language Arts Curriculum and Instruction in Grades 1-8
CI 308 – Science Curriculum and Instruction in Grades 1-8
CI 309 – Social Studies Curriculum and Instruction in Grades 1-8

Note:  Before admittance to the Block, students must have completed Math requirements (Math 203, 204, 305), science requirements (Biol 100, Phys 100 and Geol 106), Psyc 261, CJ 202 and CI 203.

Professional Semester:  The student teaching or internship semester.  Typically, this should be the student’s last semester on campus.
