4. Admission to the
Teacher Education Program in the College of Education and Human Sciences for Early Adolescence through Adolescence (EAA) grades
6-12
The admission process for the Curriculum & Instruction
(CI) programs assesses candidates' progress toward meeting the
Wisconsin
Standards for Teacher Development and Licensure as a mechanism to
determine acceptance into the programs and continuing progress through the
programs. The admission process consists of three gates:
Gate 1 Admission to program
Gate 2 Admission to professional semester
Gate 3 Recommendation for licensure
Note: All students majoring in EAA programs in the College of Education and Human Sciences are
considered pre-education majors until they have fulfilled the requirements
for the pre-program and have been accepted into the Teacher Education
Program.
Admission to this program is SELECTIVE and therefore
cannot be guaranteed. Since there may be more students applying than
there are resources available, enrollment to the program is limited to 56
students per semester.
Pre-Program Phase
1. Declare major and minor (Pre-Education
Status). Take basic general education courses required for your
major including ENGL 102 with at least a grade of C (not C-).
2. Pass the PPST (Praxis I). Take the PPST
as soon as practical (usually taken as a second semester freshman) because
it is a prerequisite for CI 210 and CI 211. Passing test scores must
be received by UW-Eau Claire prior to registering for CI 210 and CI 211.
Passing scores are Mathematics 173, Reading 175, and Writing 174.
3. Complete CI 210 and CI 211 (Must be taken
together).
CI 210 (Initial Teaching Experience in High School)
CI 211 (Initial Teaching Experience in Middle School)
To be eligible to enroll in CI 210 and CI 211 a student
must meet the following criteria:
- Pre-education status
- Minimum of 14 credits completed
- Completed ENGL 102 with at least a grade of C (not
C-)
- Resident and total GPA of 2.75 or higher
- Passing scores on the Pre-Professional Skills Test
(PPST)
** The UW-College grade point can be used to
establish a resident grade point.
School of Education
Gate 1
Admission into the Program and the School of Education
1. Apply to Program. Students must apply for
admission to the program early in the semester prior to enrolling in
"block courses". To be eligible to apply, students must have:
- Successfully completed CI 210/211
- Successfully completed PSYC 261 and CJ 202 (can be
in progress at time of application)
- Compiled a minimum grade point average of 2.75
resident (UWEC credits) and total overall (UWEC and transfer credits)
The application will be evaluated based on the following
criteria:
- Recommendation from the department of their major
- Quality of portfolio
- Student dispositions evaluated in CI 210 and CI 211
- Experience working with children/students from
various backgrounds (racial, cultural, economic, disabilities)
- Overall GPA
2. Provide Required Information. Students will
turn in a portfolio begun in CI 210/211 that will provide documentation
for all 10 of the Wisconsin Teacher Standards.
Admission to the program will depend on evaluation of
the portfolio and the recommendation of the department of the major.
Note: Application to program is not a guarantee of
entry to the program. If acceptance is denied, a student may apply
once more during a subsequent semester.
3. Enter Program Cohort. Students who are
selected for the Early Adolescence-Adolescence program will become part of
a cohort of students and will be eligible to enroll in related coursework
in the semester following their acceptance. This cohort of students
then will enter the methods courses (Block), continue with a third
semester of course work, and student teach their fourth and final
semester.
4. Maintain a Professional Portfolio. As students
proceed through the EAA program, they should compile artifacts from their
General Education and other courses, in order to assemble the presentation
portfolio required for endorsement for certification.
Gate 2
Admission to the Professional Semester (Student Teaching)
The application to the Professional Semester (Student
Teaching/Internships) is completed
a year in advance. Students eligible to student teach are invited
to do so each semester by the Department of Curriculum and Instruction (B271). Students
intending to complete their professional semester in the fall must
apply the previous fall. Similarly, students intending to
student teach in the spring must apply the previous spring.
At Gate 2, students must show evidence of meeting ALL 10 Wisconsin
Teacher Standards.
Praxis II. EAA students will have to pass the
state-approved subject matter assessment for beginning teachers.
Proof of having taken and achieved passing scores on the Praxis II is
required before students can enroll in the professional semester (student
teaching) and for recommendation for teaching licensure in the state of
Wisconsin. Scores must be on file with the Registrar.
Gate 3
Licensure
At this Gate, your student teaching experience is about
complete. Your University supervisor observed you, and it is time
for the final debriefing session. A three-way conference with your
cooperating teacher, your University supervisor, and yourself is the
culminating event that will lead to the endorsement of your
application for licensure. At this point, the final portfolio
review is the time to share your achievements throughout your program here at UW-Eau Claire. At
this Gate again, your portfolio should document your accomplishments with ALL 10 Wisconsin Teacher Standards.
