Change of Major/Minor FAQ's
When should I declare a major?
As soon as you have decided upon a new major,
you should declare. You will receive the best academic advising
in the field of your intended major. The University recommends that
you declare a major as soon as possible; however, a guideline is
no later than the beginning of your junior year, since you will
probably have completed most of the academic foundation requirements
by then.
What if I am not sure about the major in which
I am interested?
It is suggested that you visit with an adviser
in that program, who can help you determine if it meets your career
goals, etc. Career exploration is also available at UW-Eau Claire
Career Services.
Do I have to get permission to "leave"
my previous major?
No; however, out of courtesy to your previous
adviser, you may want to let them know. Also, the staff of the Academic
Advising Office who may have advised you as an undecided major would
be interested in knowing that you have made this decision.
Are you thinking about dropping your major
or minor, but are not sure this is a good idea?
Make an appointment to speak to the chair or an
advisor in that department for a discussion of your options.
Can I change my catalogue year?
Yes, you can always change to a more recent catalogue.
You will automatically be assigned to follow the curricular requirements
of the Catalogue under which you entered UW-Eau Claire, unless you
go to your major department and change to a more recent one. Students
who are absent from the University for two or more consecutive semesters
must follow the catalogue in effect at the time of their re-entry.
Note: Transfer students may choose the
catalogue that was in place when they enrolled at their previous
institution, if they have not been out of school for more than
one semester.
Can I keep the same program but change my degree?
Maybe. Some programs are offered under multiple
degrees--this is true of most of the programs in Arts & Sciences--you
may seek either a BA or a BS. Be sure to look at a what-if degree
audit and talk with your adviser about changing, however, because
the general education requirements are quite different.
Where can I find the correct program codes for
the major or minor that I want to change to?
There is a
Major/Minor Program Codes report online which lists all the
current undergraduate programs (majors/minors) and graduate programs.

report requires Adobe Acrobat Reader to be viewed.)
