Good Academic Standing

You are in good academic standing if you have met the University's standards for satisfactory academic progress during a semester.

Academic standing is calculated at the end of the Fall semester and at the end of the Spring semester.  It is not calculated at the end of Winterim or Summer.

To be in good standing you must accomplish all three of the following:

(1) Earn a semester GPA of 2.0 or above

(2) Maintain a resident GPA of 2.0 or above

"Resident" refers to all courses taken at UW-Eau Claire. Grades for transfer courses do not count in the resident GPA.

(3) Complete 75% of your total registered credits for the semester with course grades (e.g., A, B, C, D, F, S).  Marks of W, IN, and U do not count as completing a course.

An Incomplete or Unsatisfactory works like a course Withdrawal.  If you have more than one W, IN, or U, you may violate the 75% rule.

Be careful about withdrawing from more than one course. Be sure you are keeping 75% of your total credits. Exception: Every student may withdraw from any single course each semester with no negative impact on academic standing -- even if withdrawing from the course leaves fewer than 75% of the total credits on the student's record.

Example: A student who takes 12 credits can withdraw from CHEM 101 (5 credits) even though the student will then have only 7 credits (and this is only 58% of the total credits).
