Paula E. Hoff Scholarship

This scholarship has been established to honor and celebrate the life of Paula Hoff, a former UW-Eau Claire psychology major. After a courageous 19-month battle with cancer, Paula died on February 14, 2005, before she was able to complete her degree. Paula loved people, loved psychology, and was deeply committed to her goal of being of service to others. She was vivacious -- full of life and energy, and she remained so throughout the entirety of her life, including while she coped with the challenges of cancer. A friend captured the essence of Paula’s personality by saying, “If you had to pick the most alive person, it would be Paula.” She believed in making every moment count. Her courage was an inspiration to others. Paula’s goal in life was to extend a helping hand to others. Through their support of this scholarship, the contributors hope to assist a student whose life goal was to be of service to others, so that Paula’s legacy will live on.

Donna C. Turell Scholarship

Donna Cohan Turell was Dr. Susan Turell’s mother. She graduated from the University of Syracuse and taught elementary school for 3 years, until she got pregnant and wasn't allowed to teach! She was certainly a product of her generation. Donna was a stay-at-home mom with 3 kids in 5 years, and always did a lot of volunteer work. She often took her children with her and instilled that sense of service to the community in them when they were young. She had many good friends and had a fun sense of humor. Her life included struggles too, including depression. Unfortunately, Donna was diagnosed with and died from lung cancer just after her 61st birthday. She and Dr. Turell’s father were happily married for 39 years. Dr. Turell designed the scholarship to honor women, like her mom, who apply activism to their lives.
