1. What should I know about copyrights?

Copyright has two main purposes:

  • Protection of the author's general right to control how a work is used.
  • Protection of the author's right to obtain commercial benefit from valuable work.

The Copyright Office will provide information and/or forms related to author's rights, contractual arrangements, latest copyright information and enforcement of regulations.

Fair use is a legal principle that defines the limitations on the exclusive rights of copyright holders. More information on fair use is available online.

2. If I create a web-based course and leave the college, who owns it?

While the campus continues to develop it’s intellectual property rights policy, questions should be directed to the University’s Copyright Officer (copyright@uwec.edu).
