"Buffalo County Natural Resources Internship
Position Description

Job Title: Buffalo County Natural Resources Intern

Office Location: USDA-NRCS Office, Buffalo County Courthouse, 407 S. 2nd Street; Alma, WI

Job Description: The student intern will work closely with State, County and Federal conservation agencies assisting with a wide range of natural resource related activities. A major component (60%) of the intern’s job duties will involve working with local conservation clubs and schools to establish and implement a citizen based stream monitoring program. In addition, the student intern will be involved with the following activities and job duties, including but not limited to: trout habitat restoration, invasive species control and education, fish and wildlife surveys, habitat and facilities management, soil and water conservation planning on production land and GIS data management. A final report summarizing major accomplishments will be required.

Required Qualifications:
• Must have at least 2 years of post secondary education and pursuing a degree in a natural resources related field, such as conservation, biology, or another closely related field and enrolled at a post secondary institution for the fall 2012 semester.
• Valid drivers license
• Competent with Microsoft Office Programs
• Physically able to work in rugged terrain and inclement weather
• Ability to effectively communicate with landowners and work in a team setting
• Ability to work some evening and weekend hours

Preferred Qualifications:
• Ability to interpret and use aerial photos, plat books, soil maps and topographic maps
• Ability to use GPS and GIS ArcMap
• Basic knowledge of water resources management
• Basic animal and plant identification

Compensation: The intern will receive a $4,000 scholarship for fulfillment of 500 hours of work. The scholarship will be paid out throughout the summer in 3 installments (June 30, July 30 and August 30).

Start Date/End Date: June 1, 2012-August 30, 2012 (or until 500 hours fulfilled)

Sponsoring Agencies: Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, Natural Resources Conservation Service, Buffalo County Land Conservation Department and UW-Extension Buffalo County

Deadline for Applications: Applications must be postmarked no later than Tuesday March 20, 2012.
