Student-Faculty Research Collaboration

Student research collaboration at UW-Eau Claire allows undergraduates to get hands-on experience with the kind of research work they will conduct in master's and doctoral programs.  Working in conjunction with a faculty member, student collaborators work on research with the intent of presenting the research at a major conference and possibly publishing the manuscript in a peer-reviewed journal.

I believe that student collaborative research is an invaluable experience for all undergraduates seriously considering continuing their academic careers after receiving their degrees.  I strongly encourage students to look into the possibility of doing collaborative research at least once during their time at UW-Eau Claire. Below you will find information about my recent collaborations.

Midwest Political Science Association-Chicago, 2006

Sally Trnka and I presented our research on the connection between public opinion and the television show Law & Order.

Midwest Political Science Association-Chicago, 2005

Steve Kerbaugh and I presented our expanded research on public opinion of the Imperial presidency, including new data from Roper and Gallup polls and information from the Pew Center. Steve is now enrolled in law school at the University of Minnesota.

American Political Science Association-Chicago, 2004

Steve Kerbaugh and I presented our research on public opinion of the Imperial presidency. Steve is now enrolled in law school at the University of Minnesota.

Midwest Political Science Association-Chicago, 2004

Mark Rasmusson and I presented a paper on the impact of European Union membership on the voter turnout rates in member countries. Mark has recently finished his education degree at UW-Eau Claire.

Southern Political Science Association-Savannah, 2002

Allyson Clark and I presented a paper on the causes of voter roll-off in presidential and non-presidential elections. Allyson is currently attending graduate school at Hamline University in St. Paul and we are revising the paper.

American Political Science Association-Boston, 2002

Matthew Breitzmann and William MacMillan presented a paper with Dr. Terence Garrett and yours truly on consumerist attitudes among college students. We were looking at the impact of the 'student as customer' attitude that has become prevalent in higher education to see if this approach has changed how college students think higher education should function. WIlliam is currently enrolled in the Ph.D. program at the University of Michigan.

Midwest Political Science Association-Chicago, 2002

Ben Licht and I presented a paper on changes in the perceptions of gays and lesbians over time at the April Midwest Political Science Association conference in Chicago. This paper, which was originally written for POLS 290. Ben completed his MPA at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. and is currently working for the federal government.

Southwestern Political Science Association-New Orleans, 2002

Two political science majors from UWEC attended the March, 2002 meeting of the Southwest Political Science Association in New Orleans. Glory Koloen and I presented our project on the use of new statistical techniques to look at the election of Jesse Ventura in 1998. Allyson Clark and I participated in a roundtable on the place of the United States in the world based on our research about the public's knowledge of foreign policy.

American Political Science Association-San Francisco, 2001

Four students from UWEC attended the American Political Science Association national conference in San Francisco with me to present our research. It should be noted that undergraduates do not normally attend the national conference. According to the director of membership, fewer than 40 of the 6000+ people in attendance were undergrad's, and Eau Claire accounted for more than 10% of the total!

James Johnson and Melissa Gehring presented our paper on the impact of casinos on voter turnout on reservations Thursday morning. You can click on the picture of them to upload the paper in .pdf format.

On Friday, Lindsey Duerst and Glory Koloen presented our poster presentation on the political content of late night talk-show monologues. Click on the picture to see the paper in .pdf format as well.
