The Kell Container Corporation Scholarship for Faculty/Student Collaborative Research

*Please note that the amount of this award has changed for the 2009-2010 year. Also, students may no longer be nominated, but must write their own application, with assistance of their mentor.

A. Background:

This scholarship was created and is endowed through the generosity of Kell Container Corporation of Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, in order to offer a premier award for an undergraduate student who is involved in faculty/student research collaboration at UW-Eau Claire. The scholarship, which covers resident tuition and fees, will be supplemented with project expenses for a student stipend, supplies, and travel through the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs. In addition, the faculty mentor will receive a $2,200 stipend during the project period. These supplements to the scholarship will be awarded through a Faculty/Student Research Collaboration or Summer Research Experience for Undergraduates Grant.

B. Amount:

Resident tuition and fees for the academic year.

C. Eligibility Criteria:

The recipient will be an undergraduate student with junior or senior standing at UW-Eau Claire during the award period. The recipient will have conducted outstanding collaborative research or demonstrated the potential for outstanding undergraduate research. Students from all disciplines may apply.

D. Application Procedure:

Students must apply for this scholarship directly, with assistance from their faculty/staff mentor(s).

The following materials must be submitted to the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs:

  1. A letter of recommendation from the faculty mentor who is familiar with the student’s research and potential.
  2. Evidence of student academic standing as indicated in an official transcript of all college-level course work.
  3. Evidence of financial need, if applicable. Attach a copy of your Federal Application for Student Aid (FAFSA).
  4. A student résumé, including past research accomplishments.
  5. A brief faculty vita.
  6. A plan for proposed collaborative research to be accomplished during the award period. The proposal consists of the cover page (CEX Form VII), and a narrative. The narrative should be written for an audience of non-specialists in the area of study. It should include clear statements of the:
    • Objectives
    • Project Description and its relationship to the state of knowledge in the field
    • Significance of the proposed project
    • Nature and extent of student involvement
    • Plan for disseminating the results
    • List of literature cited


    The narrative should be no more than 10-pages, have a minimum of 1 inch margins on all sides, be in Times New Roman, 12 point font, and double-spaced.

E. Application Deadline:

One copy of all application materials is due in the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs by February 15 or the next working day if this date falls on a weekend or holiday. Applicants should obtain signatures of endorsement from their faculty mentor and department chair (or equivalents) prior to submitting the proposal to the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs.

F. Selection Procedure:

This scholarship will be administered by the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs under the direction of the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Research. The selection committee will consist of faculty members with representation from each college represented in the applicant pool. This committee will select the recipient on a best qualified basis and in accordance with donor guidelines established by the UW-Eau Claire Foundation. The scholarship recipient will be notified prior to May 15, and the scholarship will be awarded for the next academic year.

G. Reporting Requirements:

The Kell Container Corporation Scholarship recipient will provide a report by the end of the Fall semester indicating progress made on the proposed collaborative research. Positive review of this report will serve as the basis for continued scholarship support during the Spring  semester. The Kell Scholar will also be expected to participate in the annual UW-Eau Claire Student Research Day.
