UW System Submission Information and Deadlines

UW System annually announces competitions of interest to faculty and academic staff. Depending on the type of grant program, some system proposals are handled by NET and some by ORSP. Due to budget restrictions, some of these programs may not be available during the 2007-08 academic year. Frequently used grant programs and their local system deadlines are listed below. In some instances, exact deadlines have not been announced by UW System prior to publication of this guideline booklet. Please call the NET Office at 36-5711 or Office of Research and Sponsored Programs at 36-3405 for current deadline and program information prior to developing a proposal for any of these UW System programs.

A. Wisconsin Fertilizer Research Program

This program funds applied research projects that address problems with soil management, soil fertility, or plant nutrition. Additionally, projects can address groundwater or surface water problems that may be related to fertilizer usage. C. Wisconsin ESEA Improving Teacher Quality Program

This is a grants program for increasing student achievement in the arts, civics and government, economics, English, foreign languages, geography, history, mathematics, reading or language arts, and science, by improving the teaching and principal leadership quality at the K-12 level in Wisconsin's public and private schools. E. Conference Development Grants (OPID)

A special RFP is being sponsored for Discipline-based Events for the Spring 2008 Conference Development Grants. Previously, programs have consisted of workshops, presentations, or mini-conferences on teaching-related subject; funding can be used to pay for guest speakers, and to support travel, materials and some expenses incidental to the funded event. This program does not support travel for individual faculty members attending non-OPID-funded events. Awards may range up to $1,000. F. Wisconsin Teaching Fellow Program

This program is designed for outstanding faculty and teaching academic staff who have over ten years of teaching experience. Focusing on the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, it gives participants the opportunity at mid-career to contemplate the nature of their own teaching and their students' learning. Throughout the year-long program, the Teaching Scholars undertake a major course revision, culminating in a public presentation of their project at OPID's Spring Conference. G. Wisconsin Teaching Scholar Program

This program is designed for untenured faculty and academic staff who show exceptional promise as college teachers. Nominees must have at least two years and no more than six years of full-time teaching experience at the college level, with at least one year at their current institution. H. Solid Waste Program

Proposals are sought for research into alternative methods of solid waste disposal, including the reduction of the amount of solid waste generated, the reuse and recycling of materials, composting,   source separation, and the disposal of household hazardous    waste. K. PK-16 Initiative: Teacher Quality Initiative

This program invites proposals to support campus activities that will advance the successful implementation of PI 34, The Wisconsin Quality Educator Initiative, and delivery of quality educational preparation programs built upon a foundation of all university responsibility and broad-based collaboration. Funding will support activities related to the initial preparation and/or on-going professional development of teachers, including mentoring and new teacher induction. L. Committee on Baccalaureate Expansion (COBE) Projects Grant

Collaborative projects between UW institutions and between UW and Wisconsin Technical College System (WTCS) institutions are encouraged and are eligible for funding. Funded projects will address one or more of the thirteen baccalaureate expansion strategies outlined in the "Final Report" on the COBE website listed below. M. Curricular Redesign Grants

The purpose of the program is to support curriculum redesign and related faculty and staff development in the effective use of technology in teaching and learning. This program supports a wide variety of project types, from planning to assessment, with an emphasis on multi-institutional collaborations. N. Grants to Prepare Extramural Grant Applications

Under the UW System “Release Time” grant program, a UW-Eau Claire faculty member may request a summer stipend of $3,000 from System, which will be matched by $500 for travel or services and supplies expenses from ORSP (application form).  We recommend, as a back-up, that applicants also apply to the UW-Eau Claire Summer Extramural Grant Development program.

NOTE: Applicants may apply for both the ORSP Summer Extramural Development Grant AND this grant; both applications should be submitted to ORSP by March 1.

O. Undergraduate Teaching and Learning Grants (UTLG-SoTL)

These collaborative grants are intended to be used to support systematic inquiry into student learning. They may be used as seed money for a new idea or project, or as a way to supplement research into an existing program or initiative for first-year students. P. Support Grants for Racial/Ethnic Studies: Institute on Race & Ethnicity (IRE)

The purpose of the program is to support projects at UW System campuses that relate to the further development of study on racial and ethnic topics.

  • Category A: scholarly research with the intention of publication on racial and ethnic topic, maximum dollar request $5,000;
  • Category B: development and teaching of new courses pertaining to racial and ethnic topics, maximum dollar request $5,000;
  • Category C: events and lectures related to racial and ethnic topics, maximum dollar request $2,000.
  • Minority Faculty Research Awards: provide release time and support to tenure-track, minority faculty members for their research and writing in order to enhance their opportunities for achieving tenure.

Q.Closing the Achievement Gap - OAD

The goal of the grant program is to develop and support programs that are effective in promoting institutional change to foster access and excellence for historically underrepresented populations. Particular attention will be given to models, programs and strategies with demonstrated success in closing gaps in achievement in the areas of access, retention and graduation. 

Proposals are limited to two per institution.  Please submit a preproposal consisting of a ONE PARAGRAPH project synopsis to ORSP by March 26, 2008. More information can be found at: http://www.uwsa.edu/oadd/grants/.
