National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Stipend Incentive

A. Writing Guide

The application for this award should be submitted on the National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Stipend Incentive form (NEH Form.doc) and completed in Word.  When the application document is completed it should be no longer than 2 pages in total length.  The project description should be written in a form clearly understandable to persons outside of the applicant’s specialty.

B. Background and Purpose

This program was designed to encourage faculty with expertise in the humanities to apply for National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Summer Stipend awards (www.neh.gov/grants/guidelines/stipends.html).  These awards are prestigious and highly competitive.  The small incentive of $1000 may be taken either as a stipend or as expense reimbursement.  The grant carries the expectation that a Summer Stipend application will be submitted in the next competition, typically in early October.

C. Eligibility

Faculty and academic staff with .5 FTE or greater appointment are eligible to apply if they meet the following criteria:  (1) will hold an appointment at UW-Eau Claire during the academic year following the award, (2) have not received a notice of non-renewal, and (3) have complied with all requirements of previous UW-Eau Claire and extramural grants/awards.

D. Deadline for Application

The application should be submitted electronically, as an e-mail attachment, to the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs (forward to orsp@uwec.edu with NEHSS in the subject line) by the last day of the Interim term (early June).  In addition, please submit one paper copy, with signatures of the department chair, applicant, and dean of the college.
