Orientation for Freshmen

Placement Testing

Who needs to take placement tests?

All new freshmen are required to complete UW-System placement tests BEFORE attending an Orientation session.

  • Students who have not completed college level work in English or mathematics must take placement tests in these subjects.
  • Students who have taken two or more years of Spanish, French or German and do not have college level credit in the language must take a language placement test.

When can I take the placement tests and how can I register?

Most students complete these tests during Regional Placement Testing in March or April. To find out when the tests are offered and to register, go to The Center for Placement Testing.

What if I can’t take the tests during Regional Placement Testing?

The placement tests will be given the day before selected Orientation dates. You will indicate your need to take placement tests when you register for Orientation. See the testing schedule for 2008.

What if I am a transfer student?

  • If you are transferring from a UW System school and you took placement tests there, we can usually locate your scores. Please contact the Academic Testing Office, Schofield 226A, (715) 836-5522.
  • If you are transferring in credits in English composition, Foreign languages or Mathematics courses numbered 100 or above, you usually do not have to take placement tests in those subjects.
  • If you need to take placement tests, they are offered as part of Transfer Orientation.
