Orientation for Freshmen

How to be Successful Personally

Get involved--Participate in at least one of the 190 organizations on campus.

  • Fill out the Blugold Interest Inventory—organizations may contact you.
  • Take advantage of the Residence Hall programs including Hall Council, the National Residence Hall Honorary, TV10, and the Residence Hall Activities Board.
  • Off-campus students—try even harder to get involved.

Attend CUBEfest activities—particularly if you live off campus.

Remember other students are looking for new friends—almost all new freshmen are in the same boat. Be willing to take the first step, to talk with the person sitting next to you in class, to say hello to everyone you meet in the residence hall.

  • “Don’t stay in your room all the time.”
  • “Be outgoing, talk to people, get to know at least one person in each of your classes.”

Be patient with your roommate. Give it time.

  • “Respect others! Cooperate, especially with your roommate.”

Stay connected with your parents and family at the same time that you gain new independence.

Take care of yourself—get enough sleep, eat well and exercise.

Use Hilltop Center and Recreation.

  • Utilize recreational opportunities.
  • Join an intramural team.
  • Use the Nautilus Fitness Center.

Explore all the great activities on campus.

Make responsible decisions. You will have many opportunities to make choices about your academic and personal life.

  • Read the “Right to Know” newspaper.
  • Know that underage drinking violations start at over $200 and the fine for false I.D.’s is over $400.
