Zivnuska, Philip S. Mathematics

AVAILABLE: Annually
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:
Applicants must be enrolled at UW-Eau Claire for at least six semester credits during the term of the independent study project; have declared mathematics major or minor; be of sophomore or junior standing; and have a cumulative and mathematics GPA of 3.25 or greater. The Mathematics Department Awards Committee will ask faculty to contact students that satisfy the eligibility criteria and who they have identified as being likely to benefit from an independent study under their direction after a formal request from the Awards Committee Chair. Faculty will have one week to complete consultations with students who then forward application materials including an independent study paper, to the Chair of the Math Awards Committee. Faculty who sponsor students are expected to attend the Awards Committee meeting at which the Zivnuska Scholarship winner is to be determined. The selected student will be asked to write a proposal with a faculty member for an independent study project.
APPLICATION PROCEDURE:
To be considered for this scholarship, a student must complete a two-stage process: 1) Complete an application that includes a proposal for an independent study project with one or more members of the Mathematics Department. Forms are available in the Mathematics Department Office (HHH 508) or copy and paste this link into a new browser window, http://www.uwec.edu/math/Awards/index.htm. 2) After notification of the award, enroll in Math 399 for variable credit with the sponsoring faculty member within the next three semesters (spring, summer or fall).
SELECTION PROCEDURE:
The Awards Committee will select the recipient based upon previous academic accomplishments, potential for growth and development from an independent study; potential for sharing knowledge gained from an independent study, i.e. Math retreat talks, presentations at MAA meetings, submitting an article to a journal, etc.
SELECTION DEADLINE:
On or about December 15.
NOTIFICATION:
The recipient of this scholarship will receive a notification letter and will be honored at the Department of Mathematics Graduation and Awards Celebration. The Department will complete and submit a “Scholarship Award Form” to the Financial Aid Office.
