AMOUNT: $1,000 AVAILABLE: Annually ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: The fellowship is awarded to a continuing sophomore or junior with a declared major or minor in journalism- broadcast. Candidates must have demonstrated a commitment to the broadcast news field. This fellowship consists of the scholarship funds and a three weeks mentoring/shadowing in the news department at KSTP-TV in Minneapolis-St. Paul during winter break.APPLICATION PROCEDURE: Candidates submit a written essay, up-to-date resume’ and an application form that provides evidence of a commitment to the broadcast news field to the Scholarship Committee. The required application form is available in the Department of Communication and Journalism office.APPLICATION DEADLINE: Early to mid April SELECTION PROCEDURE: The Department of Communication and Journalism Scholarship Committee selects the recipient. Scholarship Committee members carefully review all candidates’ materials and applications then make the selection.SELECTION DEADLINE: Early to mid-April. NOTIFICATION: The recipient will be sent a notification letter from the chair of the department, who will also complete and submit a “Scholarship Award Form” to the Financial Aid Office.SPECIAL NOTES: A letter of gratitude addressed to Professor Henry Lippold should be submitted directly to the department program associate. The winner of this award is expected to attend the Department of Communication and Journalism Student Excellence Recognition Reception held the last day of spring semester. Professor Henry Lippold established the broadcast journalism sequence at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. His life and career represent the classic bridge between academic and the broadcast industry. He taught broadcast journalism at UWEC from 1972 to 2001. Lippold received a BS in political science from the University of Wisconsin- Madison and a Master of Science in Journalism from Northwestern University. In June 2002, he was inducted into the Wisconsin Broadcasters Hall of Fame. He taught mainly broadcast journalism for 43 years. From 1959 to 1972 he taught at the University of Illinois and was news director and anchor at the University’s television station, WILL-TV. His commercial TV news career includes: anchor/reporter at WMT-AM/TV, Cedar Rapids, Iowa and WEAU-TV, Eau Claire. He began in radio in 1947 at WOSH, Oshkosh and later worked at WIBU, Poynette; WHA, Madison; WAXX/WAYY, Eau Claire (all Wis.); and WLS, Chicago. |
